Default Updated Linux, now can't get past memtest

I updated my aunts Linux Ubuntu. It hasn't been updated in many years, if ever.
After dowloading and instaling all the updates, it automatically restarted.
When it restarted, it went to memtest86. I figured I would just let it go (I know nothing of Linux), but it went for days.
I can't get away from memtest to the desktop.
What went wrong, and how can I fix it?

Unlike Windows, in order to upgrade Linux from one version to the next, you must re-install the entire operating system using a disk containing the current version. But don't feel bad, you're not the first person who found this out the hard way.

If your aunt likes Ubuntu, she'll love Linux Mint 7. It's based on Ubuntu but it contains all of the special files necessary to play media files.

Sorry, there is no quick fix for this. But there is good news. You can use the install (Live CD) to access your aunt's hard drive and save all her data files to an external storage device, like a thumb drive, before installing the new system.

If you need a free software program to burn image files to a disk, ImgBurn is a light-weight Windows program that is very easy to use.

No. Linux doesn't work that way. Sorry.

The problem is that the files you updated to were not meant for that version of Ubuntu. Those updates were specifically written for the current version.

What you need to do is download and burn a new copy of a Linux distro, Ubuntu or Linux Mint. It will download as an ISO image. You burn the image to a CD and then boot from that disk.

You can use ImgBurn listed above to create the disk on a Windows machine.

Here is an excellent tutorial for installing Ubuntu from a Live CD.

Linux Mint 7 follows the exact same installation procedures.

Once installed, you can run all the updates.

Remember to extract any data files before installing the new system.
