So I finally pulled the trigger on the Ally X last week mainly for that massive battery upgrade and man, the ergonomics are way better than the original Z1E model. Ive been handheld gaming since the GameBoy days and usually I have my kit dialed in perfectly but this new chassis is throwing me for a loop. Its just thick enough that none of my old slim cases or sleeves fit properly anymore. I tried sliding it into my old Tomtoc slim pouch and the joysticks were screaming under the pressure so I backed off immediately. dont want to drift my sticks before I even finish my first playthrough of Elden Ring on this thing.

Im looking for a real slim hardshell or even a very tight-fitting clip-on case that doesnt turn the device into a literal brick. I commute on the subway here in New York every day and my backpack is already stuffed with my work laptop and a change of clothes for the gym so I really cant do those giant carrying cases that look like a mini suitcase. I need something that preserves the portable part of the handheld. Most of the slim options I see are still way too bulky for a crowded bag.

I have a few specific things I am looking for:

  • needs to be a true hardshell and not that floppy silicone stuff
  • must have perfect cutouts for the new vent positions so it doesnt overheat
  • looking to spend under 40 bucks total

I saw some random brands on Amazon but they all look like generic rebrands and I dont want to waste money on something that makes the back buttons mushy or blocks the USB-C ports. Has anyone found a shell that actually fits the Xs specific dimensions yet? Most of what I see listed says its for the original Ally but we all know that wont work because of the grip changes and the different port layout on top.

I have a trip out to the west coast coming up next Friday so I really need to get something ordered soon so it doesnt get scratched up in my bag. Are there any companies doing the slim form-factor well for the X yet or am I stuck waiting for the big name brands to catch up? I saw some stuff on AliExpress but the shipping time is way too long for my flight...

I totally get the subway struggle. Carrying a handheld in a packed bag in NYC is basically asking for stick drift if you dont have a rigid cover to protect those sticks. Since you need it by next Friday, you should look at the Skull & Co. GripCase for ROG Ally X. Its usually the go-to for long-time handheld users because it adds protection without making the device feel like a total brick. The cutouts are actually precise for the X, so you wont have to worry about the new vent placement or the USB-C ports being blocked. It stays well under your 40 dollar budget too. Another solid shout for portability is the ProCase Flip Cover for ROG Ally X. Its basically a slim shell with a magnetic cover that snaps over the front. Its the thinnest way to protect the screen and joysticks without needing an actual carrying bag taking up space in your backpack. I've used their covers on my other devices and the build quality is decent for the price. It doesnt interfere with the back buttons at all which is a huge plus when you're playing something like Elden Ring. Just triple check the listing title before you hit buy... some sellers are still trying to offload old stock for the original Ally and those definitely wont fit the X grips. Good luck with the trip, that cross-country flight is the perfect time to finally get through the DLC.

I once had a thin one trap heat and it nearly warped my vent. For under forty bucks, you might want to consider the ProCase Flip Cover for ROG Ally X Slim Hard Shell instead. It protects the screen and sticks without the bulk of a suitcase. Most shells are just junk, but this one actually fits the new X grips safely.

Unfortunately, most slim shells right now are pretty disappointing and feel like cheap rebrands that dont account for the Xs new dimensions. I had issues with generic shells blocking the top vents.

  • JSAUX PC Transparent Hard Shell for ROG Ally X This one is under 40 bucks and fits the new port layout way better than the old stuff. Let me know if you need anything else!

Building on the earlier suggestion, its been a real struggle finding anything that actually fits the new chassis correctly. Manufacturers are being lazy and stretching old designs, which is why your sticks are getting crushed. I actually measured the depth and the new grips add about 4mm of clearance issues for most slim bags. Unfortunately, I had issues with a few generic shells where the PC was so thick it blocked the headphone jack. If you need it by next Friday:

  • Skull & Co. GripCase for ROG Ally X Slim Shell
  • Mumba Blade Series Case for ROG Ally X The cooling is the main worry tho. I saw shells where intake cutouts were off by nearly 3mm... total recipe for thermal throttling. Definitely check the alignment before your flight.

To add to the point above: those flip covers can actually be a bit of a trap. In my experience, they protect the screen fine, but the pressure from a stuffed backpack still transfers straight to the joystick modules if the cover plate isnt perfectly rigid. Ive been through a dozen cases over the years across different handhelds and most of these slim shells are just cheap plastic that wont last.

  • Spigen Rugged Armor for ROG Ally X
  • TiMOVO Hard PC Slim Shell for ROG Ally X Honestly, if you are worried about the subway crush, the Spigen is the play. People think it is bulky because of the branding, but it is actually very streamlined for the X's new curves. It has a much better grip texture than those slippery transparent PC shells too. Just watch out for the generic clones... they usually mess up the top trigger clearance and you will end up with stuck buttons right when you are trying to dodge a boss. Tbh, the generic ones also tend to have rough edges around the USB-C ports which can scratch your cables.
