Are existing Joy-Cons compatible with the new Nintendo Switch 2?

With all the rumors swirling about the Nintendo Switch 2, I’m starting to get a bit anxious about my current setup. I’ve invested quite a bit in several pairs of Joy-Cons, including those limited edition Zelda ones, so I’m really hoping I won’t have to start my collection from scratch. Has there been any official word or reliable leaks regarding backward compatibility for controllers? I’m specifically wondering if they’ll slide into the new rails or if the rumored magnetic connection will make my current ones obsolete. It would be a huge relief if I could use them for multiplayer right out of the box. Does anyone know if our old Joy-Cons will actually work with the new hardware?

oh man, I totally feel u on this! I've got a small fortune tied up in my Nintendo Switch Joy-Con L/R - Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Edition and I'd literally cry if they became expensive paperweights.

So, based on what I've been reading from some fairly reliable leaks, I would suggest being cautiously optimistic but prepared. Word on the street is the Nintendo Switch 2 might use magnetic rails, which basically means our current Joy-Cons won't physically slide onto the sides of the new handheld.

But dont panic yet! I mean, I honestly think they'll still work wirelessly for multiplayer. Here is what I'm thinking to save some cash:

* Keep ur current Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Pair for 4-player couch coop.
* If they dont fit the rails, maybe look into a cheap 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 (usually around $20) just in case there are pairing issues.
* Wait for the official reveal before buying new $80 sets!!

I guess we gotta be careful tho, cuz Nintendo loves making us buy new stuff. I really hope we can keep using our old gear to save money, cuz those new console prices are gonna be rough... peace!

This^ Also wanted to add that, while those leaks about magnetic rails sound pretty legit, I’d still be cautious. In my experience with tech transitions, Nintendo might lock the physical attachment but keep the Bluetooth protocol the same. I've used Nintendo Switch Joy-Con L/R for years across different consoles, and if they do go magnetic, you'll likely just need a bridge or use them wirelessly for tabletop mode. Honestly, I'm betting on backward compatibility via firmware, even if they don't "click" in. gl!!

Sooo, I was actually worried about the same thing since I've spent a ton on my setup! In my experience, Nintendo usually tries to keep things somewhat budget-friendly for existing fans. Even if the rails change, you probably wont have to toss your gear.

1. Stick with official Nintendo accessories—they're basically guaranteed to have some legacy support.
2. Id bet on a software update or a cheap adapter being the fix if the magnets are real.
3. Honestly, just hang onto your current controllers cuz they'll highkey still be great for multiplayer!

It works well for me to just wait and see, but I wouldnt stress too much about the cost yet! peace
