Hey everyone! I finally upgraded to the ASUS ROG Ally X, and while that 80Wh internal battery is a massive improvement over the original, I'm planning some long-haul flights soon and need some extra juice. Since the Ally X pulls quite a bit of power in Turbo mode, I'm looking for a high-capacity power bank that supports at least 65W (ideally 100W) Power Delivery to ensure it actually charges while I'm playing. I'm trying to find something reliable that stays under the 100Wh airline limit but still offers maximum capacity. I've been eyeing the Anker Prime series, but are there other solid options that handle the Ally X's power demands well? What are you guys using to keep your handheld powered up on the go?
Ok so, I went through this last year when I was travelin a ton with my OG Ally. I tried to save some cash by grabbin a generic high-wattage brick... big mistake lol. It literally started smellin like burnt plastic in my bag cuz the sustained 65W draw was too much for its cheap BMS. Honestly, it scared me off "no-name" budget stuff for good, especially since a bad controller can actually fry ur expensive handheld.
Since then, I’ve been usin the MOVESSPEED 100W 25000mAh Power Bank M25. I found it on sale for like $55, which is a total steal for 100W PD. It stays way cooler than that cheapo one did, even when the Ally X is pushin 30W Turbo mode. I mean, the NTC thermistors and over-temp protection are highkey a must if ur gonna be pullin that much juice on a plane. Basically, just keep an eye on those "lightning deals" on Amazon... you can usually snag it for way less than the Anker stuff without sacrificin the safety bits. Peace!
for your situation, I'd basically compare the CUKTECH 20 Power Bank 210W 25000mAh against the INIU 140W 27000mAh Power Bank (BI-B64). honestly the Cuktech handles sustained heat way better for Turbo mode, while INIU is the real budget winner if price is ur main concern. Id go Cuktech for the Ally X tho, its realy solid value. gl!
Similar situation here - I went through this last year. Honestly, I tried to save cash with a cheaper high-wattage brand and it was a disaster. Market research shows many 100W bricks can't actually handle sustained output. Mine throttled way down cuz of heat after 10 mins. Be careful; that 65W draw is NO JOKE for portable batteries.
TL;DR: Avoid cheap 100W bricks; thermal throttling will kill your charging speed mid-game.
In my experience, Anker is usually the safest bet for high-draw gear. I mean, they actually hold their rated wattage without overheating, which is CRITICAL for that 30W Turbo mode. I also use a Baseus brick that handles 100W PD just fine. Basically, stay around 27,000mAh or 99Wh so TSA doesnt take it... its literally the max capacity you can carry. gl!
Hey, just catching up on this thread! Ngl, the Ally X is a beast, but finding the right brick is kinda tricky because of how much power it pulls. Basically, the thing to watch out for isn't just the total capacity, but the "sustained" output. See, some banks claim 100W but they can't actually hold it for more than a few minutes before they throttle because of heat. If you're playing in Turbo mode, you reallyyy need that consistent flow or the Ally might actually start draining its own battery even while plugged in... which is totally wierd but it happens.
You might find this useful—check out the "PowerBank.guide" website. It's a great resource that actually tests the real-world efficiency of these things. Most banks lose like 20-30% of their capacity just from the heat of converting voltage, so it's good to see which ones are actually efficient.
Here are a few I've been looking at:
* Anker 737 Power Bank (PowerCore 24K) - Honestly, this is the gold standard. It has a screen that shows real-time wattage so you know exactly what's going on.
* Ugreen Nexode 100W 20,000mAh Power Bank - I would suggest this if you're on a budget. It's usually way cheaper than Anker but still handles high-draw gear well.
* Baseus Blade 100W 20,000mAh Laptop Power Bank - This one is super thin, which makes it easier to slide into a travel bag.
Just make sure to use a cable rated for 100W too!! If you use a cheap phone cable, it wont work. gl with the flight! 👍
Jumping in here... ngl, I've been pretty disappointed with the premium power bank market lately. I've had issues with several high-end units that were unfortunately not as good as expected when it came to sustained 65W output. Most of them start out strong but then drop off because they get way too hot, which is a total buzzkill mid-game. I even started carrying a hardware meter just to check if they were actually hitting their numbers, and most of them lie tbh. If you want something that actually lets you see what's happening under the hood, these worked for me:
