So I finally got my hands on a PS5 Pro and I'm super hyped to play everything in 4k60 but the internal storage is gonna fill up so fast with my library. I looked around and saw people recommending the WD Black SN850X and the Samsung 990 Pro but honestly I'm a bit lost. Some folks on Reddit say the Samsung one needs a firmware update first or it gets weird and I dont even have a PC to do that with. Plus does the Pro even need faster read speeds than the base model?

  • 2TB is the goal
  • budget is around $180 max
  • needs a built in heatsink because I'm clumsy

Let me know what you guys are running in yours...

> budget is around $180 max Prices are unfortunately higher than expected lately. Id grab the Nextorage G-Series 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink since its basically plug-and-play and usually fits your budget perfectly.

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, stay away from that Samsung one if..."

  • I definitely agree with that caution. I actually had a drive start throwing read errors because it was on an old firmware version and I had no way to patch it without a PC. If you dont have a rig handy, you really need something that works perfectly right out of the box without any tinkering. To answer your question about the Pro, it still targets the same 5,500 MB/s minimum, but I would suggest aiming higher just for future-proofing. Here are two alternatives that stay within your $180 budget:
  • Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink which is arguably the gold standard for reliability in these consoles.
  • Corsair MP600 Pro LPX 2TB SSD with Heatsink which has a very low profile heatsink that fits perfectly in the slot. Be careful with the dimensions tho. Make sure the heatsink height doesn't exceed 11.25mm or the cover wont close right...

Honestly, stay away from that Samsung one if you dont have a PC. I had issues with it being super buggy before the update, it was such a letdown. Unfortunately, a lot of drives are just overpriced right now. Try these instead:

  • Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink
  • Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe with Heatsink Theyre reliable and fit your budget. Good luck!
