Is the Seagate expansion card worth it for extra Xbox storage?

Hey everyone! I’m finally hitting that wall where my Xbox Series X internal storage is completely full, and I'm tired of constantly deleting games to make room. I’ve been looking at the Seagate Expansion Card, but that high price tag is definitely making me hesitate. I know it’s the only way to play 'Optimized for Series X|S' games directly without moving them back and forth, but is the convenience really worth the $150+ investment? I’ve thought about just getting a cheaper external HDD, but I’m worried about long transfer times. For those who actually bought one, does the seamless experience justify the cost, or are there better alternatives I should consider?

honestly i was looking at this too and realized there is actually another option now because Western Digital WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox exists and it is usually a bit cheaper than the seagate one which helps a little bit but yeah the price is still pretty crazy and i found that if you just keep your old xbox one or 360 games on a basic external drive it saves so much space on the internal for the series x games so maybe try that first? i also heard that prices drop during big sales so if you can wait a bit you might get it for way less and keep more money in your pocket which is always better right? i’m still deciding myself if i should just go for the 512gb one because it’s way cheaper than the 1tb version even though it fills up sooo fast but like money is tight and $150 is basically two or three new games

In my experience, comparing the card vs HDD: Card is fast, HDD is cheap but slow. The convenience is worth it tbh if u dont wanna wait for transfers lol.

Just catching up on this thread and wow, there's some solid advice here already! Building on the earlier suggestion about using external drives for older games, i totally agree that is the ultimate cost-saver! The consensus here is spot on—cards for convenience, external drives for the budget. Honestly, if you want speed but hate the expansion card prices, you should grab a fast portable ssd like the Crucial X9 Pro 1TB Portable SSD. It is seriously amazing how fast it moves games back and forth compared to an old hard drive! It wont play Series X games directly, but it makes the shuffle so much less painful. I've been doing this for years and it's a fantastic middle ground. Love seeing people find workarounds for those pricey proprietary cards!
