Ive been gaming on Sony consoles since the PS2 days so I usually know my way around a setup but Im honestly stumped right now with this whole 3D audio thing on the PS5. I bought the official Pulse 3D headset at launch and it was fine for a while but I really wanted to step up the immersion for games like Returnal and the new Horizon because those soundscapes are insane. I recently tried hooking up some higher-end open-back cans through the controller jack and it sounded like garbage, totally flat and lost all the directional cues I was expecting. I even tried a pair of Sennheisers I had lying around but the volume was way too low and the spatial positioning felt... weird? Like behind me sounded like it was actually above me. Im getting super frustrated because I have a budget of about $350-$400 saved up and I want to buy something this week but I dont want to keep guessing and returning stuff to Amazon. Is the Audeze Maxwell actually worth the hype for the Tempest engine or should I be looking at something with a dedicated base station like the SteelSeries Nova Pros? I need that pinpoint accuracy where I can actually hear a leaf crunching behind me to the left. What are you guys using that actually makes the 3D audio pop?

@Reply #3 - good point! In my experience, those $400 sets always break quickly. I've tried many, so for a safer bet:

To add to the point above: Razers really killing it in the mid-tier market lately. The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro 2023 Wireless Headset is super solid.

  • Accurate spatial imaging
  • Lightweight No complaints.

Regarding what #1 said about the Maxwell being heavy... comfort is a huge factor for long sessions. Before I dive in, are you strictly looking for wireless or would you consider a wired amp setup? I am very satisfied with these for 3D audio accuracy:

Caught this late. I switched to the Sony INZONE H9 Wireless Noise Cancelling Gaming Headset last year. Check RTINGS for imaging benchmarks, but for me it works:

  • Native support
  • Accurate enough
