Hey everyone! I finally managed to snag a PS5 after months of searching, but now I’m hitting a bit of a wall with my current display situation. I’m currently hooked up to an old 1080p office monitor that I’ve had for years, and it’s definitely not doing the console any justice. I can really see the lack of detail, and the colors feel super washed out when I'm playing games like Spider-Man 2 or Horizon Forbidden West.
I’m looking to upgrade to something that actually showcases what the PS5 can do, but I’m on a pretty tight budget after spending so much on the console and a few games. I’ve been doing some research, but it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. There are so many specs to consider—4K vs. 1440p, refresh rates, and panel types—and I’m confused about what actually matters for a 'budget' setup.
Ideally, I’d love to find something under $300 that still feels like a significant upgrade. I’ve heard mixed things about whether 120Hz is worth it on a budget screen, or if I should prioritize a 4K resolution at 60Hz instead. Also, since the PS5 supports VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) now, I’m wondering if that’s a 'must-have' feature I should be looking for in this price range, or if that’s only found on the high-end displays.
I’m mostly playing a mix of single-player RPGs and the occasional round of Call of Duty, so I need a good balance between visuals and responsiveness. Does anyone have specific models they’ve used with their PS5 that didn't break the bank? I’m really hoping to find that 'sweet spot' monitor that offers the best bang for your buck.
What are the best budget-friendly monitors you’d recommend for a PS5 setup right now, and which features should I prioritize if I can't have them all?
Ok so, I've done a ton of market research on this lately and honestly, you might find this useful—check out RTINGS.com or the Hardware Unboxed YouTube channel. They have the most precise technical data on response times and VRR ranges for budget panels.
If you want the best bang for your buck under $300, the brand comparison really comes down to panel quality. While everyone loves LG, I'm super satisfied with the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ3A 27” 1440p 180Hz QHD Monitor as a technical alternative. It's usually around $250 and handles the PS5 1440p output and VRR perfectly. Another solid budget-friendly play is the Dell G2724D 27-inch QHD Gaming Monitor, which is frequently on sale for $230-$270. It actually has one of the best IPS panels for contrast in this price bracket, which helps those colors in Spider-Man 2 pop way more than your old office screen.
Priority wise? Definitely go 1440p/120Hz over 4K/60Hz. The PS5 handles the upscaling well, and that high refresh rate is a game changer for CoD. gl!!
Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, 1440p is the way to go if ur on a budget... 4K looks great but usually its only 60Hz at this price point. I'm super satisfied with the LG 27GP850-B 27” Ultragear QHD Nano IPS Gaming Monitor cuz it handles 120Hz perfectly and the colors actually pop unlike those washed out office screens. If u want a cheaper alternative that works well, check out the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ 27” 1440P HDR Monitor. Both have solid VRR support which is lowkey a lifesaver for smoother gameplay!
yo, congrats on the PS5! honestly, I feel u on the old 1080p struggle—it basically kills the vibe of next-gen games. I've been through a few monitors recently and it's been kinda frustrating tbh. For ur budget, you gotta decide between 4K/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz. personally, i think 1440p is the sweet spot because PS5 supports it natively now and you get those buttery smooth frames in CoD.
I tried the Samsung Odyssey G5 27-inch Curved Gaming Monitor but unfortunately, the ghosting on the VA panel was sooo bad for fast games. Instead, I'd suggest the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ 27-inch 1440p Monitor. It's got an IPS panel so colors actually pop, and it handles VRR perfectly. If u really want 4K under $300, look at the ASUS TUF Gaming VG289Q 28-inch 4K Monitor, but keep in mind it's capped at 60Hz. personally? i'd go 1440p/144Hz every time. gl! 👍
Quick question—how close are you actually sitting to the screen? If you're at a desk, 1440p is honestly the sweet spot, but if you're further back, you might want that 4K crispness instead.
I've had a bit of a rough time with budget screens lately... I tried the Gigabyte M27Q 27-inch 170Hz 1440p Gaming Monitor and while the specs were killer, the text clarity felt weirdly off to me. But for PS5, it's actually solid because it supports 1440p natively now. If you really want 4K under $300, you could look at the ASUS TUF Gaming VG289Q 28” HDR Gaming Monitor 4K, but you're stuck at 60Hz.
Personally, I'd prioritize VRR over 4K though. I used a monitor without it and the screen tearing in Spider-Man was sooo annoying. Something like the Dell G2724D 27-inch QHD Gaming Monitor is a beast for the price and handles VRR well, unlike some cheaper panels that flicker. Let me know your viewing distance tho, cuz that changes everything!
Same setup here, love it

In my experience, the biggest trap people fall into with budget monitors is chasing the HDR label. Most of these sub-300 screens claim HDR support but the peak brightness is so low it actually makes the image look worse than standard mode. Ive tried many displays over the years and if it isnt at least HDR 600 with local dimming, youre just getting a marketing gimmick that ruins the colors in games like Horizon. I actually spent the better part of my afternoon yesterday just rearranging my whole desk setup because I realized my cable management was a total mess. Seriously, I had like three power strips daisy-chained behind the monitor stand and the heat coming off them was getting sketchy. Spent three hours zip-tying cables when I should have been gaming. Anyway, just watch out for those fake specs on the cheaper panels.
