I just dropped a fortune on this ROG Ally X and honestly I am so stressed trying to figure out what I actually need to make this thing usable for my trip to Tokyo next month. I finally upgraded from my old Switch but man the accessory market for this thing is a total mess right now. I spent like three hours on Reddit and YouTube yesterday and I feel more lost than when I started.

One thing I keep seeing is people swearing by the official ASUS travel case but then I read a bunch of reviews saying it is way too cramped for the X since it is slightly thicker than the original model and it doesnt even have space for the charger. Like what is the point of a travel case if I have to carry the power brick in my pocket? Then there is the whole screen protector debate. Some people say the glass is fine but others are saying you absolutely need an anti-glare one or the reflections will kill you... but does that mess with the colors? I really dont want to ruin that nice screen just because I was worried about a little glare.

My budget is pretty tight now after buying the actual handheld so I probably only have like 130 or 150 bucks left to spend on extras. I am mainly gonna be playing Elden Ring and some Cyberpunk on the plane so I need stuff that actually matters for long sessions. Do I really need a dock if I am just traveling? Or should I put that money into a better power bank even though the X has a bigger battery? I saw some people talking about hall effect stick replacements but that sounds terrifying to do myself and I dont want to void the warranty day one.

I just want a simple list of what is actually mandatory vs what is just nice to have fluff that people are trying to sell me. Is a grip case worth it or does it make the whole thing way too heavy? My wrists already get kind of sore after an hour. I really need to get this stuff ordered like today so it gets here before I fly out. What are the absolute bare essentials that you guys actually use every single day?

Just catching up on this thread. I've cycled through a ton of gear over the years and for a Tokyo flight, you really want to balance weight with protection. If your wrists hurt, stay away from those heavy silicone skins that add unnecessary bulk. I've compared the Jsaux ModCase for ROG Ally X PC0110 against premium options like the WaterField Designs CitySlicker for ROG Ally X. The WaterField is beautiful but pretty spendy. The Jsaux is much better for a tight budget because it includes a snap-on hard shell travel cover, so you dont even need a separate bulky case taking up room in your carry-on. For power, I've used the Sharge Shargeek 100 Power Bank 25600mAh 100W and while it looks cool, it's basically a heavy brick. The INIU 140W Power Bank 27000mAh is usually half the price and just as fast for the Ally X. Grab that and maybe a Cable Matters 240W USB C Cable 6.6ft since the stock cord is way too short for plane seats. Safe travels!

Honestly, keeping it simple is the way to go for a big trip. You dont want to be messing with internal hardware like sticks right before a flight to Japan. If your wrists are already hurting, definitely avoid adding a heavy grip case because the Ally X is already beefier than the original and the extra weight adds up fast. Here is what I actually use for reliability:

  • Spigen Rugged Armor Pro Case for ROG Ally X
  • This one is a tank and actually fits the X dimensions without crushing the sticks like the soft cases do.
  • amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector for ASUS ROG Ally
  • Stick with standard glass. Anti-glare sounds nice but it definitely makes the screen look slightly fuzzy and kills the contrast.
  • Ugreen Nexode 100W GaN Charger
  • The stock charger is a nightmare to pack. This is way smaller and lets you charge your phone at the same time safely. Since you are worried about the screen, just get a basic glass protector. It protects against scratches without ruining that vivid color. Skip the dock for now. You are going to Tokyo... you probably wont be sitting in a hotel room hooked up to a TV anyway. Save that cash for a power bank if you find a good deal. Keep the weight down for the plane ride or your wrists will definitely feel it by the time you land. Stick to the basics and enjoy the flight.

Stick to basics for safety. I would suggest:

  • dbrand Tempered Glass Screen Protector
  • Anker 737 Power Bank 140W Be careful with internal mods like hall effect sticks.

Unfortunately, that official case was a total letdown for me. Quick question tho, what bag are you taking?

  • Tomtoc Arccos-G42 Carrying Bag fits the brick.
  • Baseus Blade 100W Power Bank is way slimmer.

Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
