I finally secured a PS5 Pro, but I’m a bit lost on what extras are actually essential. Since the stand and disc drive are separate purchases, I'm trying to prioritize my budget. Are there specific monitors or SSDs that really make the Pro's power shine? What are the absolute must-have accessories you’re picking up for day one?

So I actually just set mine up yesterday and honestly... I felt the same way about the budget. That price tag for the console alone is brutal!! I realy wanted to get the best out of the PSSR stuff without breaking the bank. For storage, I skipped the super expensive brands and went for the WD_BLACK 2TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD. It's super fast and usually way cheaper than the 990 Pro. I also realized my old screen wasn't doing the Pro justice, so I picked up the Gigabyte M27U 27" 160Hz 4K Gaming Monitor because it has HDMI 2.1 for a decent price. It's kinda crazy how much better the 4K looks at 60fps now.

Lesson learned: dont buy the official Sony accessories yet!! I just use a generic usb-c cable to charge my controller for now. Just make sure to get a decent heatsink for the SSD if it doesnt come with one. basically, focus on the screen and storage first, the rest is just fluff. gl!

In my experience, dont waste money on the official stand... it's a total rip-off.

- Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD: Highkey pricey.
- Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe SSD: Best budget storage (around $135).
- MSI MAG 274UPF 27" 4K 144Hz Monitor: Great value 4K.

Best choice is the Lexar SSD plus a cheap $15 third-party stand. Save that cash for games tbh! gl!

Just found this thread and honestly I was so stressed about the DIY side of things. Ive never even looked inside a console before and I almost went to a repair shop just to get the disc drive and SSD installed. Im so glad I just tried it myself though because it was super easy and saved me a ton of money. If ur a beginner like me, dont be scared of it! Here is what I ended up using:

Like someone mentioned, the hidden costs really start to bite after you drop that much on the console. I've been using my setup for a while now and honestly, some of the common advice I followed at first was a letdown.

  • The stock HDMI cable was disappointing. It actually gave me flickering issues at 120Hz on my OLED. Swapping it for the Zeskit Maya 8K 48Gbps HDMI Cable fixed everything instantly. It's way better value than the overpriced brands.
  • For storage, heat was an issue on the last drive I owned. This time I settled on the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G 2TB NVMe SSD. It has stayed remarkably cool over months of heavy use, which is peace of mind you need when the console is this pricey.
  • Audio-wise, the old headset was not as good as expected for comfort. The Sony Pulse Elite Wireless Headset is a much better long-term investment. Those planar drivers really make the Pro's 3D audio pop, tho the mic boom is a bit flimsy feeling for the price. Just my experience so far. It's a bummer you have to buy so much extra stuff to really feel the Pro experience, but these few things made a real difference for me.

So, I was in the exact same spot when I first set up my rig, basically stressing over every dollar cuz let's be real, the console itself is already a massive hit to the wallet. Honestly, I learned the hard way that you dont actually need the top-tier branded stuff to see a HUGE difference.

For storage, I was worried about speeds, but I ended up grabbing a mid-range 2TB drive that was way cheaper than the popular ones mentioned earlier. It's been rock solid for me... basically zero difference in load times compared to the internal drive. Highkey the best decision I made cuz the 2TB it comes with fills up soooo fast if you play a lot of AAA titles.

When it comes to the screen, I spent a lot of time researching panels. My current setup uses a 4K monitor with 144Hz and VRR support. If ur monitor doesnt have VRR, ur definately missing out on what makes the Pro actually shine. The smoothness is wierdly addictive once you see it. I'd prioritize a good display over any other accessory tbh.

Oh, and regarding that stand? Skip it. Mine has been horizontal since day one and it stays perfectly cool and looks fine. Save that cash for a decent charging station or maybe some quality thumbstick grips. In my experience, focusing on the stuff that actually affects gameplay—like the display and storage—is the only way to go if you wanna be satisfied long-term without going broke. Good luck dude!

Stumbled upon this while checking some IOPS benchmarks for the Pro. If you really want to maximize that hardware, you gotta look at the sustained write speeds and endurance. Everyone goes for the big names, but I actually swear by the Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB with Heatsink. The TBW (Total Bytes Written) rating is way higher than most consumer drives, which is huge if you're a heavy user who constantly swaps games. For the screen, definitely hit up RTINGS.com to compare real-world response times before buying. You really want full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth to use the Pro's VRR properly. I've been using the Gigabyte M28U 28 inch 4K Gaming Monitor and it's basically the sweet spot for 4K 144Hz without spending $1k. Doing the SSD install yourself is definitely the move. Just a pro-tip: if you buy a drive without a heatsink to save $20, make sure you pick up the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 Heatsink. It actually replaces the entire console slot cover and does a much better job at heat dissipation than those tiny stick-on ones. Super easy to screw in, even if you're not a tech person!
