Hey everyone! I’m finally hitting a wall with my PS4’s storage capacity. Between those massive Call of Duty updates and my growing digital library, I’m constantly forced to delete old favorites just to play something new, which is honestly so frustrating. I’m looking to grab an external drive, ideally 2TB or 4TB, but I’m torn between a standard HDD and spending extra for an SSD. Does an SSD actually improve load times enough on a standard PS4 to justify the price, or should I just stick with a reliable Seagate or WD portable drive? I'd love to stay under $100 if possible. Which specific models have you guys found to be the most reliable and easy to set up?

So, I wasted money on an SSD years ago but the base PS4 hardware just can't use the extra speed. I'd grab the Silicon Power 4TB Rugged Armor A60 External Hard Drive because it's tough as nails and way cheaper per gigabyte. Honestly, having more storage space for those massive updates is way better than saving a few seconds on a loading screen!!

yo, I totally feel u on the storage struggle. COD updates are seriously the worst lol. Basically, the base PS4 uses an older SATA connection that limits how fast data moves internally. This means an SSD actually wont give u the "wow" factor u might expect, which is kinda disappointing tbh. I tried a budget SSD once and it honestly wasnt as good as expected for the price...

For your situation, I suggest sticking with a high-capacity HDD:
* Grab the Seagate Portable 2TB External Hard Drive HDD (STGX2000400) for a solid, budget-friendly choice.
* If u want even more room, the WD 4TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive (WDBPKJ0040BBK-WESN) often stays under $100.

Quick tip: Stick to HDDs for a standard PS4; the load time difference is too small to justify the high SSD cost. Just plug it in, format it in the settings, and ur good. gl! 👍

Hey! Basically, dont waste cash on an SSD for a base PS4 since the SATA II interface limits transfer speeds anyway. I'd stick with the WD Elements Portable 4TB or Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB. The WD offers massive capacity while the Toshiba is super budget-friendly. Honestly, the WD is the best choice because youll need that 4TB for those huge COD updates lol... it's way more cost-effective!

Look, most consumer drives in the sub-100 price range use SMR technology to hit those high capacities, which is fine for archival but can struggle with sustained write speeds during those massive COD patches. If you want the best reliability based on actual failure rate data, its more about the internal controller and housing than just the brand name on the box. While the big three dominate the market, some niche brands actually provide better ingress protection and thermal management for the money.

  • ADATA HD710 Pro 4TB External Hard Drive
  • G-Technology ArmorATD 2TB Rugged Portable External Hard Drive The ADATA is a tank and handles vibration way better than the standard plastic portables, which is great if your console sits on a desk that gets bumped. The G-Tech unit is basically the enterprise version of a WD drive - the build quality is significantly higher and the thermal dissipation is superior. Tbh, for a base PS4, just make sure youre not going over 8TB or the system wont even recognize the partition properly. Stick with 4TB and youll be set for years.
