Which carrying cases offer the best protection for the Nintendo Switch 2?

So I finally managed to secure a pre-order for the Switch 2 after refreshing my browser for like three hours straight and honestly my hands are still shaking a bit. But now the anxiety is really setting in because I am literally the most clumsy person on the planet. I dropped my v1 Switch like three years ago on the sidewalk and the screen just shattered into a million pieces and I had to pay a fortune to get it fixed and I just cant go through that again. I am NOT doing that again with this new one especially since its probably gonna be even more expensive to repair and parts will be hard to find for a while.

Ive been looking at a few different cases online and Im totally torn between a few options and I really need to decide fast because I have a flight to Japan in about two weeks and I refuse to put this thing in my bag unprotected. Here is what Im looking at:

  • Spigen Rugged Armor Pro: I use their phone cases and they are solid but this one looks really bulky and might take up too much room.
  • Tomtoc Slim Case: Everyone says these are the best for travel but it looks so thin that I worry if I drop my bag the screen will just snap.
  • Orzly Carry Case: Its way cheaper and has a lot of storage but is the quality actually there to protect the hardware?

My budget is strictly under 50 dollars and I really need something that has a hard shell but isnt like carrying a briefcase around. I need to be able to fit it into a standard North Face backpack along with my laptop and a hoodie without it being a huge struggle to zip shut. I keep going back and forth on whether I should prioritize the slimness of the Tomtoc or the bulkier protection of the Spigen. Does anyone know if the internal padding on the Spigen is actually better or am I just paying for the brand name at this point? Im honestly so worried about the joysticks getting drifted or the screen getting crushed if the bag gets shoved into an overhead bin... which case do you guys think actually handles a drop the best?

Honestly for a flight and your history of drops, the Spigen Rugged Armor Pro Pouch is the way to go.

  • Spigen: Best shock absorption and joystick protection, tho its thick.
  • Tomtoc Slim Case Hardshell: Super portable, but less peace of mind for heavy bags. I use the Spigen in my backpack all the time. It fits, just gotta slide it in last. Shell is way more rigid than the Orzly.

Jumping in here because I totally get the travel anxiety. Dropped my North Face pack down a flight of stairs at the airport once and my gear survived only because I stopped using those paper-thin sleeves. If you want something that isnt a total brick but protects better than the slim ones, here are a couple of solid picks:

  • Skull & Co. Maxcarry Case for Switch is probably the sweet spot. Its a hard EVA shell so it wont crush under a laptop, plus the interior is molded so the joysticks dont get clicked down.
  • RDS Industries Game Traveler Deluxe System Case is surprisingly sturdy. It comes with plastic game cases that actually add a bit of structural support over the screen area. The Orzly one is alright but the zippers feel kinda janky after a while. Skull and Co fits the backpack vibe best imo.

The thread covers the slim vs bulky trade-off well. Ive been very satisfied with the Butterfox Large Carrying Case for Switch OLED and V2 for its methodical protection and high-quality padding.

I totally get that pre-order stress, its the absolute worst. I actually had a similar nightmare on a trip to Tokyo last year where my bag got shoved under the seat and the pressure actually messed up my left stick inside a generic case. I learned the hard way that hard shell doesnt always mean crush-proof if the internal design is just a flat pocket. You really want to make sure whatever you get has molded indentations for the triggers and sticks so they arent taking the weight of your laptop or hoodie. I would suggest looking at the Sinvitron Hard Shell Carrying Case for Switch. It has an extra reinforced middle layer that most of the cheaper ones skip, which gives way more peace of mind for the screen. Another one I really trust when I am packing light but still want that rigid feel is the MambaSnake Hard Shell Protective Case. It has a bit more internal clearance than the Tomtoc so your joysticks arent constantly being clicked down while your bag is stuffed. Just be careful with the zipper quality on some of the ultra-budget ones tho, you really dont want those failing at the terminal. Let me know if you need more info on how they fit in a pack!
