Hey everyone! I’ve been running into a major wall lately with my PS4. I’m still rocking the original 500GB model, and honestly, it’s becoming a bit of a nightmare to manage. Between the massive updates for Call of Duty and keeping a few open-world games like Red Dead Redemption 2 installed, I’m constantly having to delete one game just to play another. I’m tired of the 'not enough free space' notification popping up every time a new patch drops!
I’ve decided it’s finally time to pull the trigger on an external hard drive, but I’m a bit overwhelmed by the options. I know the PS4 supports USB 3.0, but I’m seeing a lot of conflicting info on whether I should go for a standard HDD or if an SSD is actually worth the extra money for a console this old. Does an SSD significantly improve those brutal loading screens, or is the console’s hardware a bottleneck anyway?
My budget is around $80 to $100, and I’m ideally looking for at least 2TB of space so I don’t have to worry about this again for a long time. I’ve looked at the Seagate Game Drive since it’s officially licensed, but then I see WD My Passport drives for a bit cheaper and wonder if there's any real performance difference between them. I also want to make sure I get something durable that won't overheat if I leave it plugged in for long gaming sessions.
For those of you who have expanded your storage, what has been your experience? Are there specific brands or models that are known for being the most reliable with the PS4 system software? I'd love to hear your recommendations on what the best 'bang for your buck' drive is right now!

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, an HDD is way more *budget-friendly* since the PS4's USB ports limit how fast an SSD can actually go anyway. I'm also newer to this, but I just found the Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 for around $60-70! It's such an amazing deal compared to those "official" ones. You'll definately save money and still get tons of space for those huge CoD updates. It's been reallyyy reliable for me so far! 👍

In my experience, you should definitely skip the expensive SSDs for an external PS4 drive since the console’s hardware bottlenecks the speed anyway. Honestly, I've tried many drives over the years and the WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive is the best bang for your buck right now. It usually goes for about $60-$70, which is well under your budget! It's super reliable, stays cool, and basically gives you the same performance as those "official" branded ones for way less money. gl!!

yo, honestly I feel u on the storage struggle... 500GB is basically nothing these days with those CoD patches! In my experience, an SSD is *definitely* better for internal swaps, but for an external drive on a base PS4, the USB 3.0 bus is a bit of a bottleneck. You'll see some minor speed gains, but basically not enough to justify the price jump if you want raw capacity.
Here's what I suggest for your $100 budget:
1. WD My Passport 2TB Portable External Hard Drive - This is my top pick. It's super reliable and I've found it runs cooler than the Seagate ones during long sessions. Plus, it's usually cheaper since you aren't paying for the PlayStation branding.
2. Seagate Game Drive for PS4 2TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - Basically the same tech as the WD, but it's officially licensed. It looks cool next to the console but performance-wise? Pretty much identical tbh.

i was messin around with my old console setup yesterday and honestly people often ignore the actual technical specs under the hood... you might want to consider how the drive handles data fragmentation before you commit. i did a deep dive into this for a diy project and found that the controller chip matters more than the brand name on the box.
- search youtube for digital foundry ps4 external drive tests
- look up smr vs cmr drives on reddit to see why it matters for game installs
- check the official playstation support site for the max power draw specs basically just google the specific technical white papers if you want the real data... theres a bunch of tech guys who have already benchmarked every possible configuration so you dont have to guess. be careful with those super cheap options tho since they might have garbage endurance ratings and die on you mid-patch.

Just found this thread and honestly everyone is spot on about the SSD vs HDD thing. For a base PS4, an SSD is basically overkill because the USB 3.0 port just wont let it hit those top speeds anyway. If you want reliability without paying the gamer tax for that official logo, I usually suggest the Seagate Expansion 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0. Its usually around 60 to 70 dollars and its been a tank for me. Since you mentioned being worried about durability and leaving it plugged in, you might also check out the Silicon Power 2TB Rugged Armor A60.
