Which NVMe SSD is fastest for the Sony PS5 Pro?

With the PS5 Pro finally arriving, I’m looking to upgrade the internal storage right away to handle all those enhanced titles. I know the base console required at least 5,500MB/s, but I’m wondering if the Pro can actually utilize the newer PCIe Gen 5 speeds or if I should stick with a high-end Gen 4 drive like the WD_BLACK SN850X or the Samsung 990 Pro. I really want to minimize loading screens as much as possible for 4K gaming. Is there a specific read-speed ceiling I should look for, and do I still need a beefy heatsink for the best performance? Which specific NVMe model currently offers the fastest real-world load times for the PS5 Pro?

oh man, I literally just went through this exact same rabbit hole when I pre-ordered my Pro!! honestly, I was sooo tempted to grab a Gen 5 drive just to be "future proof," but after looking at the technical specs, it turns out the PS5 Pro is still limited to a PCIe Gen 4 slot... so yeah, buying a Gen 5 drive would basically be like putting racing fuel in a minivan—it just cant use the extra speed lol. For your situation, I would suggest sticking with the top-tier Gen 4 drives. From my experience researching the interface, the real-world difference in loading times between a 5,500MB/s drive and a 7,000MB/s one is usually like less than a second anyway. I ended up picking up the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink because its consistently ranked as one of the fastest for random read speeds, which is what actually matters for gaming. Another solid bet is the WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink—a lot of people say it feels a bit snappier in the long run, and I think its a bit cheaper too? And seriously, make sure to get a beefy heatsink!! The Pro gets pretty toasty when running those "Enhanced" titles at 4K, and if the drive thermal throttles, your speeds will tank hard. TL;DR: The PS5 Pro cant actually utilize Gen 5 speeds, so stick to high-end Gen 4 drives around 7,000MB/s+ with a built-in heatsink. Lesson learned: Dont overspend on Gen 5 tech for a console that literally cant support it yet!! i guess we gotta wait for the PS6 for those crazy speeds?? peace.

Yep, this is the way

Tbh speed is only half the battle. Since the Pro is gonna be pushing more power, you really want to focus on heat and long-term reliability. If a drive runs too hot itll just throttle and your load times will actually get worse. I always look for high TBW (Total Bytes Written) ratings so the drive doesnt die after a few years of moving 100GB games around.

  • Seagate FireCuda 530
  • This is basically the gold standard for reliability imo. It has insane endurance ratings compared to most others on the market.
  • Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G
  • This one is specifically optimized for DirectStorage-style workloads and handles heat really well. I highly recommend checking out the SSD Tier List on the Cultists Network website or the technical breakdowns on Digital Foundry. They have great data on which drives actually stay cool under pressure. Definitely dont skip the heatsink either. Its not just about the drive failing, its about keeping the internal temps of your new console safe. Better to over-spec the cooling than deal with a crashed system mid-boss fight!

^ This. Also, heat is the absolute killer for these consoles! I love that people are finally focusing on the cooling aspect because the Pro definitely runs hotter when pushing those high fidelity modes. It's seriously important stuff if you want to keep those speeds consistent during long sessions! When comparing the big brands for the PS5 ecosystem, here is how I usually see them:

  • Western Digital usually has the best firmware integration and is super reliable.
  • Seagate is fantastic for that peace of mind with their crazy high endurance ratings.
  • Crucial and Lexar are amazing if you want the most storage for your money without sacrificing the performance floor. I'm just so hyped to see how these high-end Gen 4 drives actually perform once we start seeing more PSSR enhanced titles hitting the store! Honestly it is gonna be a total game changer for loading times.

  • Honestly, its frustrating how much people overpay for brand names alone when the Pro wont even let you use Gen 5 speeds. I had issues with some of the more expensive drives before where they just didnt live up to the hype for the price. If you want to be smart about it, grab the Kingston KC3000 2TB NVMe SSD. It hits 7,000MB/s which is more than enough for the Pro, but unfortunately it runs pretty hot if you dont use a proper DIY heatsink. The Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD is another one that is okay, but I felt like the build quality was not as good as expected tbh... it feels a bit flimsy. I usually just buy a bare drive and slap on a ElecGear PS5 NVMe SSD Heatsink myself because those factory pre-installed ones are usually overpriced and dont vent well enough. Its a bit of a letdown that Sony didnt upgrade the interface to Gen 5 for the Pro, but sticking with a solid Gen 4 drive is the only way to not waste money.
