I just managed to snag the new console and my wallet is crying. I've got a couple of older 8BitDo Pro 2 controllers that I used for the original Switch and I really hope I don't have to replace them for local Mario Kart nights with my roommates. I saw some tech blogger say the Bluetooth stack is basically the same so they should just connect but then I read a different thread saying Nintendo might be blocking third party stuff that doesn't have the new proprietary chip for the haptic feedback. It's confusing as hell and I'm on a strict budget after dropping 400 quid on the unit itself. Does anyone actually know which third-party controllers are confirmed to work with the Switch 2 without lag or missing features?
Quick reply while I have a sec. Building on the earlier suggestion, I have been through plenty of console launches and the 8BitDo stuff almost always carries over. Your 8BitDo Pro 2 Bluetooth Controller will handle Mario Kart just fine, tho you ll miss the specific haptic feedback patterns. If you eventually want that full feature set without the Nintendo tax, the Gulikit KK3 Max Hall Effect Controller is the best bet since it mimics the official tech pretty closely and uses hall effect sensors to avoid drift. I also recommend the Mobapad M6 HD Mechanical Joypad if you want that same HD rumble feel in handheld mode. Don't let the tech bloggers scare you into spending money you dont have... the basic Bluetooth connection isnt going anywhere and your current pads are solid.
@Reply #2 - good point! Honestly tho, I'm gonna disagree a bit on the need for the fancy haptics for a casual Mario Kart night. I've been running latency tests on my unit for a few hours and I'm incredibly satisfied with the results. The 8BitDo stuff you already have is basically perfect. If you need more pads without breaking the bank, stick to budget-friendly models that skip the proprietary haptic chip. Here is what works well for me without the high price tag:
In my experience, my old gear connects just fine. Over the years I've seen:
