I'm finally diving into the world of PC building and I’ve decided to go with an all-AMD build for my first setup. I’m trying to keep costs down while still getting solid performance for 1080p gaming and general productivity. Currently, I'm a bit torn between the older but reliable AM4 platform and the newer AM5, but I’m leaning toward whatever offers the best price-to-performance ratio right now.
I’ve been looking at the Ryzen 5 5600 since it seems like a legendary budget pick, but I’m curious if it’s still the king or if I should spend a bit more for something like the Ryzen 5 7600 to be more future-proof. I’m planning on pairing this with a Radeon RX 6600 or 6650 XT, so I want to make sure I’m not creating a massive bottleneck. My total budget for the CPU is under $180, and I really want to avoid any chips that run too hot since I'll likely be using the stock cooler at first.
For those of you who have built budget AMD rigs recently, which processor would you recommend as the sweet spot for a beginner? Is it worth jumping to the newer socket, or should I stick with the proven AM4 bargains?

Ok so honestly, I would suggest just going with any newer AMD chip from the latest platform generation! Seriously, the safety and thermal reliability on the new socket is AMAZING and literally keeps everything running so stable. I'm all about that peace of mind, you know? Plus, the newer tech runs sooo much more efficiently which is fantastic if you're worried about heat. Trust me, you're gonna love the longevity!! 👍
Basically I went through this exact same dilemma last year when I was building my first budget rig. I was torn between the newer platform and saving cash, but honestly I'm SO glad I stuck with AM4 for my budget. I ended up grabbing the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 and paired it with the PowerColor Fighter AMD Radeon RX 6600 8GB GDDR6, and the value was just insane. I think I paid around $130 for the CPU back then!
My experience with the stock cooler was actually totally fine—it stays around 65-70C during gaming and never sounds like a jet engine or anything. Plus, going with the older socket meant I could get a solid MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX motherboard for way under $80, which left me extra room in the budget for 32GB of RAM. I mean, the 7600 is faster for sure, but the total platform cost with DDR5 was just too high for my $180 CPU limit. Lowkey no regrets here, it handles 1080p high settings like a champ and everything just works well together. gl with the build!!
yo! i've built so many AMD rigs and basically, the platform choice is huge cuz it dictates ur upgrade path for years. AM4 is a legend for price, but AM5 is actually where it's at if u want longevity!!
* Go with the newer socket type from AMD
* Make sure you're getting that sweet DDR5 support
honestly, just pick any newer chip in ur budget. it's totally worth the jump over the older tech imo. gl!!
