Hey everyone! I just snagged a Radeon RX 7700 XT for my new build, but I'm feeling a bit stuck on which CPU to pair it with. I’m planning to play mostly at 1440p, and I’m really worried about creating a bottleneck if I go with an older chip. I've been eyeing the Ryzen 5 7600X or possibly an i5-13600K, but I'm not sure if that's overkill or just right for this specific card. I want to ensure smooth performance in demanding titles like Starfield without overspending on parts I don't need. My budget is around $250. Which CPU do you think offers the best performance balance for the 7700 XT?

Late to the party, but honestly, I'd suggest a different approach. I once had stability issues with a budget build, so now I just get any mid-range Intel chip. They're super reliable tho.

Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X is the absolute sweet spot for that card. I've built dozens of mid-range rigs over the years, and pairing a 7700 XT with an Intel Core i5-13600K is lowkey overkill if you're trying to stay under $250.
At 1440p, your GPU does most of the heavy lifting anyway, so you wont see a massive frame jump with the i5, but youll definitely feel the extra cost in your wallet lol. Plus, going with the AM5 platform means you can upgrade the CPU in a few years without buying a new motherboard. If you really wanna save some cash, even the non-X AMD Ryzen 5 7600 is basically just as good for gaming. Just my two cents tho, gl with the build!

> "I’m planning to play mostly at 1440p, and I’m really worried about creating a bottleneck if I go with an older chip." So basically, the consensus so far is that AM5 is the smart play for longevity, while the i5-13600K might be overkill for your specific budget. I totally agree with the platform advice, but if you wanna maximize that $250 budget and get something reallyyy solid for Starfield, I’d actually look at the AMD Ryzen 7 7700. It’s often overlooked for the 6-core chips, but those 2 extra cores can actually help with 1% lows in CPU-heavy open-world titles. Another path if you want to save some serious cash is the Intel Core i5-12600KF. Tbh, it’s technically "last gen" but at 1440p you’re gonna be GPU-bound anyway, so the performance gap is tiny. I've built a few rigs with that chip lately and it’s a total value king for mid-range builds. Honestly, as long as you don't go below a 12th gen i5 or a Ryzen 7000 series, you aren't gonna see a massive bottleneck with a 7700 XT. Just make sure you spend any savings on some decent 6000MHz CL30 RAM because that makes a huge difference on these newer platforms!
Oh man, nice choice on the card!! In my experience, 1440p gaming is where things get interesting. I've been building PCs for over a decade now and honestly, your choice basically comes down to platform longevity vs raw speed. I think the AMD chip you mentioned is probably the smarter play cuz it puts you on a newer socket. Iirc, the other brand is changing sockets soon, so you might get stuck with a dead end if you go that way.
The Intel i5 you’re looking at is a total beast, but it might be a bit overkill for just gaming. I’ve seen similar builds where the AMD 5-series just handles things perfectly without any bottlenecking. If you wanna save some cash for games and other stuff, the AMD route is usually the way to go. Its definitely enough to handle Starfield smoothly. Good luck with the build dude!
