What are the top-rated X870E motherboards for the new 9850X3D?

Hey everyone! I’m finally getting ready to build a new high-end rig, and I’ve decided to go all-in on the Ryzen 9 9850X3D. Since this chip is such a powerhouse, I want to make sure I pair it with a top-tier X870E motherboard to really take advantage of the new features. I’m particularly excited about the native USB4 support and the improved PCIe 5.0 routing that the X870E chipset offers.

I’ve been browsing options from brands like ASUS, MSI, and ASRock, but I’m having a hard time deciding which ones actually live up to the hype. My main concerns are VRM quality and thermal management; I want a board that can handle the power demands of the 9850X3D without breaking a sweat during long gaming sessions. Additionally, I’m looking for something with excellent memory traces for stable high-speed EXPO profiles, as I’ve heard the new 9000-series can be picky with certain kits.

Does anyone have hands-on experience or seen reliable benchmarks for the current X870E lineup? I’m looking for a balance between premium build quality and user-friendly BIOS features. Which specific X870E models would you currently rank as the best for maximizing the performance of the 9850X3D?

Honestly, the X870E launch has been a bit of a rollercoaster with the pricing, but I totally get the hype for the 9850X3D. Before you drop $500+, basically keep in mind that the 'E' in X870E just means you're getting mandatory PCIe 5.0 on both the GPU and NVMe slots—which sounds cool, but might be overkill if you're on a budget. Since you're worried about VRMs and memory stability, I'd suggest looking at the ASRock X870E Taichi. ASRock has been killing it with their memory trace layouts lately, and that 24+2+1 power phase is literally insane for thermal management. If you wanna save a bit of cash without losing the features, maybe check out the MSI MPG X870E Carbon WiFi. It's usually a bit cheaper and the BIOS is super user-friendly for setting EXPO profiles. Just be careful with high-speed kits... I've seen some 8000MT/s kits struggle, so maybe stick to 6000 or 6400 for total stability? Good luck with the build!!

sooo I went through this last year when I was trying to figure out if the extra "E" on the chipset was even worth the cash, and honestly, the technical rabbit hole is deep lol. I ended up looking at a few boards because I was super worried about the VRM temps with a high-end chip like the 9850X3D.

Just sharing my experience with what I found while researching:

1. ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero vs MSI MPG X870E Carbon WiFi: Basically, the Hero has this insane 18+2+2 power stage setup which is lowkey overkill but great for peace of mind. The Carbon is a bit more "budget-friendly" (if you can even call it that) with an 18-phase setup too, but I noticed the BIOS on the MSI felt a bit simpler for a beginner like me to navigate EXPO settings.
2. ASRock X870E Taichi: This one is actually wild because they use those 110A SPS power stages. I was reading some technical breakdowns and it seems like ASRock really prioritized the memory traces this generation. I was worried about stability, but their "Taichi" line has been pretty solid for high-speed DDR5 kits lately.

tbh, I'm still learning about the PCIe 5.0 routing, but it seems like the X870E boards are finally getting the cooling right for those Gen5 NVMe slots. I ended up leaning towards the MSI just because the M.2 latches are SO much easier to use, though the ASUS board looks cooler... idk it's a tough call!! yo, congrats on the new build! the 9850X3D is gonna be an absolute beast. I've been building on AM5 since launch and honestly, the X870E refresh fixes a lot of the early memory headaches.

In my experience, if you want the best VRMs and zero-fuss BIOS, these are the ones I've been most happy with:

* ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero - This is basically the gold standard. The thermal management on the NVMe sinks is insane, and the AI overclocking actually works well for stabilizing EXPO profiles.
* ASRock X870E Taichi - Seriously, ASRock has been killing it lately. Their memory traces are super clean, so it's probably the best bet if youre gonna push high-speed RAM. Plus, it's built like a tank.
* MSI MPG X870E Carbon WiFi - I mean, it's just solid. The BIOS is really user-friendly and it handles power delivery without breaking a sweat.

I'm lowkey leaning towards the Taichi right now because the value is just there for a high-end board. gl with the build!! 👍
