I am finally getting ready to upgrade my setup once the Ryzen 7 9850X3D hits the shelves, and I want to make sure I pick the right X870 motherboard to handle it. I have been looking at a few options from ASUS and MSI, but the new chipset features are a bit overwhelming.
I am mainly focused on finding a board with solid VRMs for stability and at least two PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots for future storage upgrades. I am also hoping to find something with a clean, minimal aesthetic that does not go overboard on RGB. My budget is around $350.
Does anyone have early recommendations on which specific X870 models provide the best value and performance for this specific CPU?
Respectfully, I'd consider another approach. Two Gen5 slots drive prices way up.
Quick reply while I have a sec. ^ This. Also, I gotta politely disagree with skipping the Gen5 slots if you're building a 9850X3D rig. If you're dropping that much on a chip, you might as well get the storage headroom for later so you dont have to upgrade again in two years. MSI has been great for my last few builds and honestly, they just work well. No complaints about their VRM quality or the way they handle memory training. Just look at basically any of the MSI boards in that chipset range. You cant go wrong with their mid-tier stuff because they usually skip the flashy RGB junk and focus on actual cooling and stability. Just find one from them that has the ports you need and call it a day. They stay stable and the bios is way easier to deal with than some of the other brands out there right now imo.
