Hey everyone! I am currently in the middle of putting together a mid-range gaming build centered around an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. I have already picked out a solid B550 motherboard and a decent GPU, but I am starting to run a bit low on my remaining budget. I really need to find a reliable 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD that offers good performance without costing a fortune.
I am a bit torn between going for a PCIe Gen 4 drive or sticking with a Gen 3 drive to save some cash. Since this is primarily for gaming and some light office work, I am not sure if I would even notice the speed difference. I have been looking at a few specific options like the Western Digital Blue SN580 and the Crucial P3, but I am worried about whether going with a DRAM-less drive will significantly hurt the lifespan or the boot times in the long run.
Ideally, I want to keep the price under 70 dollars if possible. Here are a few things I am looking for:
Does anyone have experience with these specific budget drives on an AMD platform? What is currently the best bang-for-your-buck M.2 SSD for a Ryzen 5 setup right now?
I have built dozens of Ryzen systems and honestly, the WD Blue SN580 1TB NVMe Gen4 is the sweet spot right now. Its technically DRAM-less but uses HMB, so for gaming you really wont see a difference compared to expensive drives. It is way more reliable than the Crucial P3 in my experience. Definitely worth the small jump to Gen 4 since your B550 board supports it.
Just saw your post! Are you mostly worried about speed or the drive actually lasting for years? Im always kinda paranoid about data safety when it comes to cheaper nvme drives tbh.
