Laptop is dragging and I need it for a gig Friday so it is urgent. I saw the Crucial MX500 but then the Kingston A400 is way cheaper. My logic was save money but I heard the A400 has no DRAM and might be slow? I only have 40 bucks to spend right now... which one is better?

Honestly go with the Crucial. Ive been super satisfied with it in my old laptop. The A400 is fine if youre broke, but the lack of DRAM means it stutters sometimes.

  • Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD: Has DRAM, runs way smoother.
  • Kingston A400 480GB SATA 3 2.5 Internal SSD: Very cheap, but definitely slower under load. The Crucial is the better buy for 40 bucks.

Been thinking about your situation and honestly its so stressful when you have a deadline. I once bought a super cheap drive for a live show and it literally died right as I was booting up... just a total disaster. Unfortunately, the super low-end stuff is just not as good as expected and I hate seeing people lose data. If you have forty bucks, you can usually find something that feels a bit safer than that Kingston.

  • Western Digital Blue SA510 500GB SATA III SSD
  • Teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z 512GB SATA III SSD The WD Blue is usually my go-to for budget builds because I had issues with those other brands failing way too fast. I wouldnt trust the A400 for a gig tbh. Just make sure you get it installed tonight so you can test it before Friday... good luck man.

I totally agree. Honestly its ridiculous how companies cut corners while prices go up. Be careful, budget drives are basically scams and it drives me crazy. Let me know if you need anything else!

Building on the earlier suggestion, be careful with the A400. I once saw insane latency spikes during an update cuz of the lack of DRAM. Try the Samsung 870 EVO 250GB SATA III instead.
