im literally losing my mind looking at these benchmarks and prices and i just need someone to tell me what to buy before i throw my mouse across the room. i finally saved up to finish my ryzen 5800x build i got the motherboard and the gpu already just sitting there but the ssd market is a total mess right now. i have like 150 bucks left in my budget for a 2tb drive and i need to have this thing running by saturday because my cousin is coming over to help me cable manage and we want to marathon some games.
so i was thinking about the samsung 990 pro because everyone says samsung is the king of reliability right? but then i see people complaining about firmware issues and the price is just pushing it. my logic was that since i have a ryzen 5000 chip i should definitely get a gen4 drive to actually use the bandwidth but then i look at the wd black sn850x and it seems faster in some gaming tests and its cheaper too. but then theres the crucial t500 which is way cheaper and i keep wondering if i would even notice the difference in actual load times for stuff like cyberpunk or starfield.
i mean is the sn850x actually better for a pure gaming rig or am i just paying for a brand name with samsung? i read some stuff about directstorage and how it might matter soon but its all so vague. i dont want to overspend if a mid-range gen4 drive feels exactly the same as a high-end one. im leaning toward the wd black because the reviews are glowing but then i worry about it running too hot since i dont have a massive heatsink on my board. its just a lot of conflicting info and i have to order this by tonight to get it here in time...
^ This. Also, you might want to look at the Lexar NM790 2TB NVMe PCIe Gen4 because it hits that sweet spot of performance and price. It is technically a DRAMless drive, but it uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology which makes it just as fast as high-end drives for daily gaming.
I would suggest the WD Black SN850X 2TB NVMe Gen4 personally. Just be careful and make sure your case airflow is decent since those Gen4 drives get pretty toasty without a heatsink tho.
Works great for me
i was obsessing over the same specs last month tbh. ended up with the Crucial T500 2TB NVMe Gen4 and its been solid. real world gaming load times are within like a fraction of a second of the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe Gen4 anyway. it uses way less power too so it stays cooler under load. unless youre moving huge files all day, save the money and just get the crucial.
