I'm finally putting together my new AM5 build around a Ryzen 5 7600, and I’m a bit stuck on picking the right storage. Since the 7600 is a great value-to-performance chip, I want a 1TB boot drive that matches that vibe—something fast and reliable without spending more than the CPU itself costs!
I’ve been looking at PCIe 4.0 options since the platform supports it, but I’m torn between going for a high-end Gen4 drive like the WD Black SN850X or saving some cash with something like the Crucial P3 Plus. This will primarily be a gaming rig, so fast load times are a priority, but I also do some light video editing on the side. I’m a little worried about thermals too; do I need a drive with a built-in heatsink, or will the motherboard's M.2 armor be enough for these speeds?
Given the Ryzen 7600's capabilities, what 1TB NVMe drive do you think offers the best balance of speed and price right now? I'd love to hear what you guys are running in your AM5 setups!

Ok so I went through this last year when I built my first rig! I was sooo torn between the super high-end stuff and the budget drives. I ended up picking the SK hynix Platinum P41 1TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 because I heard the tech behind it was basically top-tier for power efficiency. Honestly, I was worried about heat too, but the motherboard heatsink has been doing an AMAZING job!! Even when I’m doing some light video editing, the temps stay totally fine. I also looked at the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD because everyone talks about it, but the price was a bit much for my budget lol.
Quick tips:
- Stick to a drive with DRAM if you're doing video editing because it actually makes a huge difference in sustained speeds!
- Don't worry about buying an extra heatsink; your motherboard armor is seriously plenty for Gen4 speeds.
It’s been such a fun journey learning all this technical stuff... basically just look for something with a good warranty and you’re golden! gl with the build!!

I went through this last year. I was basically on a quest for the best DRAM-less drive to save cash since it's just for gaming. I ended up with the Lexar NM790 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 SSD and it's been rock solid! No overheating issues using just the motherboard heatsink either. Plus, I saved around $20-30 compared to the high-end stuff. Seriously happy with the speeds!

Here's what I recommend for your situation:
1. Go with **Western Digital**. Seriously, I've used their stuff for years and it's just rock solid. You get that amazing balance of speed and durability without overpaying.
2. Honestly, just get any Gen4 drive from **Samsung** if you're worried about reliability. They basically set the standard for flash memory and I've never had one fail on me.
3. Regarding thermals... I'm a bit cautious, so I think your motherboard armor is fine, but maybe check if the brand you pick runs hot just to be safe.

yo, i actually just finished a 7600 build for my cousin and we tried to save every penny. ngl, the Crucial T500 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD is the sweet spot for value right now. it's super snappy for gaming and doesn't get as hot as the top-tier drives, so ur mobo heatsink is plenty!!
Basically:
* Crucial T500 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD
* Lexar NM790 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD
Lesson learned: dont pay the "premium tax" for speeds u wont notice in real life lol

Both are absolute spec monsters that usually retail for less than the big name brands but offer better sustained performance for video work.
