What is the best all-around SSD for modern laptops right now because I am losing my mind with these thermal issues. I have been swapping drives for years but this new ultra-thin I got for work is giving me some weird grief that I never dealt with on my desktop builds. The stock drive is basically a paperweight and it throttles down to like HDD speeds whenever I am moving my 4K video assets around. I need to buy something today from the Micro Center here in Chicago because I have a massive project due Monday and I cannot have this thing crashing on me. My budget is around 150 bucks for a 2TB. I was originally looking at the 990 Pro but I am terrified of the heat issues in such a cramped space since I cannot fit a heatsink in this chassis. Is the SK Hynix P41 actually as efficient as people say or am I gonna run into the same overheating problems? I heard the WD Black SN850X is fast but does it gulp power and kill the battery life? I just need something that stays cool and doesnt tank the battery while still giving me those snappy boot times and fast transfers. What are you guys actually using in your thin-and-lights these days...

Just found this. Which laptop model are you using specifically? Some ultra-thins only support single-sided drives, which limits 2TB choices. In my experience, flagships often encounter thermal throttling in restricted spaces... it is a common bottleneck.

  • Western Digital WD Black SN770 2TB NVMe provides a better balance of efficiency and thermal management than the SN850X.
  • Western Digital WD Blue SN580 2TB NVMe is a practical option for low temps and battery longevity.

The SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe is basically the gold standard for laptop efficiency right now. Its Aries controller pulls way less wattage under load compared to the Samsung. If they are out of stock at Micro Center, the Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe is also great. It stays cool and wont tank your battery during those long 4K transfers.
