Hey everyone! I am currently putting together a mid-range Ryzen 5 7600 build and I am stuck on the storage. My motherboard supports PCIe 4.0, so I really want to take advantage of those faster speeds without breaking the bank on a premium drive like the Samsung 990 Pro.

I have been looking at options like the Crucial P3 Plus or the WD Black SN770, but I am a bit worried about using DRAM-less drives for my main OS. I am looking for a 1TB model that offers a solid balance of speed and value.

What are you guys using in your builds? Do you have a specific budget Gen4 SSD recommendation that handles gaming and daily tasks well?

yo, DRAM is basically a high-speed map that helps your SSD find data instantly. Without it, drives use system memory (HMB), which can feel sluggish as the drive fills up. I suggest:

You might find this useful - there is an AMAZING resource called the SSD Tier List on the cultists.network site that i literally check every single time i build a rig!! it ranks drives by their hardware and reliability so u can see exactly what is safe for a boot drive and what isnt... it is basically the bible for storage, right?? honestly, i get why ur worried about DRAM-less stuff because data safety is just sooo important. if u want something super reliable and fantastic for a mid-range build, u should look at:

  • Lexar NM790 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen4x4 - this one is technically DRAM-less but it uses really new tech and is basically as fast as a 990 Pro for like $75-80!!
  • Solidigm P44 Pro 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4 - these guys are basically the old Intel storage team, so the reliability is TOP TIER for like $100. i mean, i think staying safe with ur OS drive is just the smart move... nobody wants a crash after a few months!! good luck with the 7600 build!

oh man, i totally feel u on this one! i have been building pc's for over 10 years now and i remember when gen4 drives were literally like $200 for a tiny 1tb... it was nuts!! for your ryzen 5 7600 build, i highkey recommend the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770 1TB NVMe Gen4 SSD. i know youre worried about it being dram-less but seriously it is SO amazing because it uses host memory buffer tech. it basically feels just as snappy as a premium drive for daily stuff and gaming. if you really want that dedicated dram cache tho, here is what i suggest:

> I am a bit worried about using DRAM-less drives for my main OS. Ok so, in my experience building dozens of rigs over the years, the DRAM-less fear is a bit overblown for Gen4 stuff. I mean, HMB tech is actually really solid now. But if u want that peace of mind, check out the Silicon Power XS70 1TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe. It has a dedicated DRAM cache and hits crazy speeds for the price. Honestly, its been a total beast in my last few client builds!! gl with the 7600!
