Building my 5800X rig for an editing project due Friday and I am freaking out. Read that the Samsung 980 Pro is king but then saw people saying the SN850 runs cooler and wont throttle. My budget is tight around $150 and I just dont want to pick the wrong one... what should I get?

honestly dont panic but you gotta be careful choosing between these. i went through this last year and thermal throttling is real during long video renders. if your case has bad airflow just watch out.

  • Samsung 980 Pro 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe is a beast but make sure to update the firmware immediately. there were serious longevity bugs that could kill the drive if you leave it on the old version.
  • WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe is basically the faster version of the one you saw. it gets spicy hot tho. i would suggest only getting this if your motherboard has a solid M.2 heatsink to keep it from slowing down.
  • SK hynix Platinum P41 1TB NVMe Gen4 is my dark horse pick. it runs way more efficient than the samsung and might save you from those throttling headaches during your friday deadline. id personally go with the sn850x if you have the cooling for it but play it safe with the hynix if you dont.

Late to the party but honestly just went through this exact stress test with my 5800X! I swapped my old drive for the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 1TB NVMe Gen4 and the speeds are just insane for video work. This version is basically the refined beast of the one you mentioned and it stays way more stable under heavy pressure. Seriously, pushed 4K raw footage through it for three hours straight and it barely broke a sweat! Another sleeper pick is the Kingston KC3000 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe which uses the Phison E18 controller and absolutely flies. Quick tip tho: make sure you use the M.2 heatsink that came with your motherboard or grab a cheap $10 one. These Gen4 drives get spicy and you dont want it dropping speeds right at your deadline... good luck with the project!
