Hey everyone! I’m finally putting together my dream build with a high-end Z790 board, and I really want to maximize those PCIe 5.0 lanes. I’ve been looking at the Crucial T705 and the MSI Spatium M570 Pro, as they both claim sequential speeds around 14,000 MB/s. However, I’m a bit worried about thermal throttling since I've heard these Gen5 drives run incredibly hot. Does anyone have real-world experience with which model actually maintains its peak performance during heavy 4K video editing? Between the massive active coolers and using the built-in motherboard heatsinks, what’s currently the absolute fastest and most reliable Gen5 SSD for the Z790 platform?

Ok so, similar situation here! I went through this last year tryin to save cash. Honestly, i was worried about thermals but i grabbed the TeamGroup T-Force Cardea Z540 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSD for about $250. Its worked well for my 4K exports and stays stable under my stock heatsink. Seriously happy i didnt overspend on flagship models. gl!

sooo, i tried making the jump to Gen5 recently and it was actually... really frustrating. honestly i dont think the tech is quite there yet for heavy 4K workloads without a ton of babysitting. i picked up the Crucial T705 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD and while the speeds are literally insane at first - like 14,500 MB/s - it gets so hot it's scary. i mean i was lowkey worried it might damage my motherboard or something!!

if ur choosing between the two, here is how i see it: the Crucial T705 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD is technically the fastest for sequential stuff, but the MSI Spatium M570 Pro Frozr 2TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe M.2 SSD is basically the only one that stays somewhat stable cuz of that massive tower heatsink. but even then... it's just so bulky and might not fit under ur GPU. i had issues with clearance on my Z790 board and it was a total mess.

honestly?? if ur doing heavy 4K editing, i think u might be safer with a super reliable Gen4 drive like the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD. i know its not what u wanna hear for a dream build but the Gen5 stuff is just so unreliable right now and the throttling makes it slower than Gen4 anyway once it heats up. but if u MUST go Gen5, definitely get a dedicated active cooler with a fan. anyway, gl with the build!!

Jumping in here to give you another perspective. If you are serious about that 14,000 MB/s threshold, you really gotta check out the Corsair MP700 PRO SE 2TB PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD. I have been testing this one against some of the more common picks and it is a total workhorse for long 4K sessions. The thing with these Gen5 drives is that they all use the Phison E26 Max14um controller, so the real difference comes down to how the brand handles the firmware and the massive heat. The Gigabyte AORUS Gen5 14000 SSD 2TB is another strong contender. Its heatsink is legit huge - like, it barely fits under some air coolers - but that surface area is why it doesnt throttle as fast as the Crucial. Basically, if your Z790 board has a decent M.2 fan header, go for the active cooled Corsair. The air-cooled versions might be loud, but for heavy editing, you need that active airflow to keep the controller from hitting the 80C thermal wall. Trust me, losing half your speed mid-render is way more annoying than a tiny fan spinning up... just my two cents tho!

ugh honestly i am dealing with the exact same heat issues on my z790 rig right now... it is so stressful watching those sensors hit 80c during a render. i definitely feel your pain there. i have been looking into some other options that might help us out. you might want to consider the Patriot Viper PV553 2TB PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe SSD because it has a tiny built-in blower that actually tries to move air. another one i have been eyeing is the AORUS Gen5 12000 SSD 2TB which uses a pretty beefy thermal setup. just make sure to be careful with the clearance in your case tho. those heatsinks are massive and can sometimes crowd the cpu cooler or gpu. i would suggest looking at an active solution like the ElecGear M11 M.2 2280 SSD Cooler if you want to be extra safe during those long 4k exports. its a struggle finding the balance for sure but let me know what you end up doing...

ngl i’ve had some issues with Gen5 drives lately... they’re FAST but honestly the thermals are sooo disappointing. i tried running one on my Z790 using just the built-in heatsink and it throttled almost immediately during a 4K export!! ur basically gonna need a dedicated active cooler with a fan or ur speeds will tank. Crucial and MSI are both decent but watch those temps man... it’s a struggle lol

Ok so, I was basically in the exact same spot about three months ago when I started my first "real" Z790 build. I highkey wanted those 14,000 MB/s speeds for my 4K editing, but seeing the prices on some of those flagship drives honestly scared me off a bit. I wanted the Gen5 flex without spending my entire budget on just storage, you know?

I'm still kinda new to the high-end scene, but here is what I found for a more cost-effective setup:

TeamGroup T-Force GE74 Pro PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD 2TB – This is what I eventually bought. It’s usually priced a bit lower than the big names but it still hits those 14GB/s marks. I've been using it for a few weeks and I'm really satisfied with how snappy it feels during exports.
Sabrent Rocket 5 2TB PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD – I almost went with this one because I heard it's super stable. It’s a great middle-ground if you want high-end performance without the extra brand tax.

Basically, the lesson I learned is that you dont necessarily need the most expensive drive on the shelf to get those top-tier speeds. I just used the massive heatsink that came on my motherboard and it works well enough. It gets warm, sure, but I havent seen it throttle during my renders yet. Saving that extra cash let me get more RAM, which probably helped my workflow more than a tiny bit of extra drive speed would have anyway. So yeah, definitely look at the value brands too! gl with the dream build!!
