What is the absolute fastest NVMe for an Intel 14th Gen build? I keep seeing the Crucial T705 listed as the fastest Gen 5 drive but people say it overheats and throttles constantly. I'm building a workstation for 4k editing this weekend and I'm frustrated cuz the benchmarks look fake. Should I just stick with a 990 Pro instead?

I ran into the same heat issue last month when I grabbed the Crucial T705 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe for my 14900K rig. It hits those 14,500 MB/s speeds but yeah, it gets real spicy. Honestly, for 4k editing, you'll want it but you gotta use a chunky heatsink, not just the mobo plate.

To add to the point above: honestly that Gen5 tax is just brutal right now and I dont think its worth it for most people. Youre basically paying double for speeds youll barely even notice while scrubbing 4k timelines compared to a high-end Gen4 drive. I would suggest being real cautious with those early Gen5 drives anyway because they basically act like tiny space heaters in your case. If youre trying to be smart with the budget for this workstation build, check these out instead:

  • WD Black SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD is a total beast and usually way cheaper than the Samsung stuff while being just as fast in real world tests.
  • Teamgroup T-Force Cardea A440 Pro 2TB NVMe is a sleeper pick that performs amazingly well for the price, definitely worth a look if you wanna save some cash. Make sure to stick with Gen4 for now unless you really love troubleshooting thermal throttling... just a heads up tho.

Like someone mentioned, Gen5 heat is a huge concern for long sessions. I would suggest prioritizing reliability for 4k work.

  • Check Puget Systems benchmarks for real editing data.
  • Make sure to update firmware on the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD immediately.
  • You might want to consider the SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB NVMe cuz it stays very stable. Be careful with thermals regardless of what you pick... workstation stability is key.

I have to disagree with the hype because honestly its ridiculous how weve become beta testers for these companies. It drives me crazy that they charge a premium for tech that cant even handle sustained 4k writes without melting.

  • controllers are basically space heaters
  • firmware quality has gone downhill
  • manufacturers prioritize marketing over stability I would suggest being extremely cautious. The industry is in a bad spot and reliability is basically a joke right now.
