My old Dell laptop is crawling with its original hard drive, so I'm finally looking to swap it for a 500GB SATA SSD. Since I'm on a tight budget, I'm worried about cheap drives failing. Is the Crucial MX500 still the best 'bang for your buck' choice, or should I look at WD Blue? Any reliable recommendations?

Respectfully, I'd consider another option if you're REALLY worried about reliability. While the Crucial is fine, these are safer for a laptop upgrade:
* Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SATA III 2.5-Inch Internal SSD: Best-in-class V-NAND and controller stability.
* SK hynix Gold S31 500GB SATA Gen3 2.5 inch Internal SSD: Amazing 300 TBW endurance and runs way cooler.
Both have DRAM, which is huge for safety and speed. Honestly, these are better long-term bets for your data. gl!

For your situation, I would suggest the Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD. I actually put one in my old laptop last month and I'm sooo happy with it!! It's basically a new machine now. The WD Blue SA510 500GB SATA 2.5-Inch Internal SSD is also pretty good, but honestly, the MX500 is lowkey the best bang for your buck choice. No complaints. gl!

In my experience, the Crucial is a decent option. I actually swapped one into an old Dell recently and it works well for a budget build. Honestly, it's probably the best value for your needs right now. One small thing I learned tho: check if your BIOS is set to AHCI mode first. It really helps with the speed on these older SATA controllers. Good luck!

TL;DR: grab the Teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z 512GB SATA III SSD. it's like $30 and way more reliable than most cheap drives... basically a budget beast for old laptops tbh
