What is the absolute best 2TB SSD I can toss into a laptop right now without it turning into a literal toaster? I've been building PCs for a decade so I usually just grab a 990 Pro and call it a day but I'm seeing all these reports about thermal throttling in thin laptops lately and it's stressing me out.
I'm in Chicago and need to get this thing swapped by Friday before a big shoot so I don't have time to mess around with returns. Is the SK Hynix P41 still the king of efficiency or has something better dropped for 2024 that wont kill my battery life? Budget is around $180...

Regarding what #1 said about "I was really nervous about my laptop melting..." - i had that exact same worry. I recently swapped my boot drive for the Crucial T500 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe and honestly its been awesome. Its got better power efficiency than the P41 and doesnt peak nearly as high as a 990 Pro. Really satisfied with how cool it stays during long transfers. definitely worth checking out for a laptop.

I went through this exact same thing last year when my old XPS started feeling like a hot plate. I was on a tight deadline for a project and spent way too much time looking for something that wouldnt kill my battery life or melt my logic board. I ended up trying out the Lexar NM790 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe and honestly it has been a total tank. It doesnt have the massive brand name recognition, but the efficiency is wild. It stays cool because it pulls way less power than the older flagships. Its a decent option depending on your specific thermal headroom.
- Look for drives using the Maxio MAP1602 controller as they run much cooler in thin laptops
- Use a thin Gelid Solutions GP-Ultimate Thermal Pad if your laptop lid doesnt make contact with the drive Its a solid, boring choice that just gets the job done without the drama.

I was really nervous about my laptop melting when I upgraded last month. I'm no expert, so I just wanted something reliable that wouldnt break anything. I ended up picking the SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB NVMe Gen4 and I've been so happy with it.
- it runs very cool to the touch
- my battery still lasts all day
- no weird errors It works perfectly and I dont have any complaints, which is all I really wanted.

Honestly, after losing a whole project to a drive that cooked itself during an edit once, I stopped chasing crazy benchmarks. Basically, go with Western Digital and you can't go wrong. They run super cool and I've never had one fail in a laptop. Just grab any of their current gen options and you'll be set for Friday. Reliability matters way more than peak speed for big shoots anyway... wont have to worry about overheating.
