Which NVMe SSD actually hits the advertised speeds on a Ryzen 9 7950X setup without constantly thermal throttling? im honestly so fed up with this Teamgroup drive i got on sale last month because it keeps tanking my write speeds whenever i start a big 4k video export and it just feels like such a waste of a high end build.

i have about 200 bucks to fix this mess and i need it before my next freelance project starts on monday. i was looking at the samsung 990 pro but then i saw some people complaining about firmware issues so now im just confused and annoyed. is gen5 even worth the extra heat or should i just stick to a reliable gen4 drive that wont die on me mid-render...

Quick question tho, are you using your motherboard heatsink or a dedicated one?

  • The SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB NVMe Gen4 is amazing because its Aries controller is super efficient!
  • Those 176-layer NAND stacks mean less power draw and lower temps during exports.
  • Forget the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB PCIe 4.0 drama, just update the firmware and it rips through data. That Hynix drive is my top pick for technical builds!

I'd disagree with the Hynix pick; I've had issues. Unfortunately, my Crucial T700 2TB Gen5 wasnt as good as expected.

In my experience, high-end Ryzen builds are notorious for heat issues if you dont pick your storage carefully. I've tried many different setups over the years, and honestly, Gen5 is still a bit of a furnace right now. Its just not worth the extra heat for most workflows yet. You are much better off sticking with a high-end Gen4 for stability and peace of mind tho. If you want something that actually lasts, just go with Western Digital. I have used their premium storage for a long time and their controller management is just miles ahead of those budget brands. You cant really go wrong with a high-performance drive from them for 4K video work. They handle sustained writes way better than most. Just make sure you use a decent heatsink... it makes a huge difference when you are pushing big renders and trying to hit deadlines.
