Ive been building PCs since the FX-6300 days so I thought I knew what I was doing but man this new Ryzen 7000 build is giving me a headache. I picked up a cheap Gen4 drive last week for my 7700X build and the write speeds are all over the place. It dips way lower than my old SATA SSD during large 4k video exports.
I need this rig stable for a client project by Thursday and Im honestly panicking a bit. My budget is around $150 for a 2TB. Is there a specific controller or brand that just plays better with the AMD chipset drivers?
To add to the point above: I was super satisfied after switching to the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe for my 4K projects.
Building on the earlier suggestion, you might want to consider the SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe. Be careful with those cheap drives because they usually lack a DRAM cache, which is likely why your speeds are tanking during exports. I had a similar nightmare with a client build years ago and it was super embarrassing. This drive is rock solid for sustained writes. Just make sure your motherboard heatsink is seated properly to avoid throttling.
Honestly, over the years I've found that you really can't go wrong if you just stick with Western Digital for these Ryzen builds. In my experience, their stuff just plays better with AMD chipset drivers during long video exports. I've tried many brands and theirs always stay stable. Just grab any of their 2TB Gen4 drives and you'll be totally fine for that deadline!
