I recently picked up the new Asus NUC 15 Pro+ (the ROG NUC sibling), and while I’m absolutely loving the Core Ultra performance and the sleek form factor for my daily workflow, the integrated graphics just aren't cutting it for the high-end video editing and occasional 4K gaming I want to do. Since this model features those dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, I’m looking to bridge the gap with an external GPU setup.

I’ve been researching options, but I’m a bit torn. I need something that can reliably house a beefy card like an RTX 4070 or 4080 without constant thermal throttling. My main concerns are the ease of the 'plug-and-play' experience with the NUC's drivers and whether I should prioritize an enclosure with a built-in power supply over 650W to ensure stability under load. My budget is around $400-$600 for the enclosure itself, and I’d prefer something that isn't excessively noisy since it’ll be sitting right on my desk.

Has anyone here paired the NUC 15 Pro+ with a specific eGPU that works seamlessly? I’d love to hear about your experiences with bandwidth overhead and if you encountered any specific connectivity quirks. Which enclosure would you recommend for the best balance of cooling and compatibility?

Ok so, for a budget-friendly pick that's actually super quiet, look at the Sonnet eGPU Breakaway Box 750ex. It's usually around $350-$400, basically SAVING you $200 compared to other high-end enclosures! TL;DR: Best value with 750W.

Seconding the recommendation above regarding the Sonnet! Honestly, I had such a bad experience with a cheaper generic enclosure a couple years ago—it basically fried my power supply because it couldnt handle the spikes from my card. Not great. Anyway, if youre looking for something super reliable but a bit more high-end than the Sonnet, I really think you should look into the Aakit Node Titan External GPU Enclosure 650W. I used it for a while and it was surprisingly quiet, which sounds like what ur after for desk use.

Also, just a safety tip from someone whos been down this road: definitely dont cheap out on the Thunderbolt cable. Use the one that comes in the box or get a certified Cable Matters Thunderbolt 4 Cable 40Gbps 2.6ft cuz signal drops are the worst when you're mid-render. But yeah, sticking with a 650W-750W PSU is 100% the way to go for stability with those 40-series cards. Good luck!!

Ok so, I've been running NUC setups for years and honestly, Thunderbolt overhead is REAL. For that Asus NUC 15 Pro+, you gotta be careful with those beefy 40-series cards cuz they're HUGE. I've used a few different enclosures and learned the hard way that 650W is basically the bare minimum if you want stability under load. I definitely suggest finding one with a massive internal PSU or even swapping the stock one for a high-quality SFX unit if you wanna keep it quiet.

A few things I'd check first:
- Does the card literally fit? (Length AND slot width are killers)
- Is the enclosure fan gonna drive you crazy on your desk?
- Does it provide enough Power Delivery to keep things simple?

So yeah, before you drop $500, are you planning on using an external monitor or the NUC screen? Also, have you checked the actual physical dimensions of that 4080 yet? Some of those triple-fan cards wont even fit in standard enclosures tbh. gl!

Curious about one thing: what's the actual length and slot thickness of the GPU you're eyeing? I've been down the eGPU rabbit hole with NUCs before and, honestly, it can be a total nightmare if you dont measure twice. I once tried cramming a triple-fan card into a smaller case and it literally wouldn't close... super frustrating.

Since you're looking for stability and have a decent budget, you might wanna check out the Razer Core X Aluminum External GPU Enclosure. It's pretty much the gold standard for reliability and has a beefy 650W PSU, though the noise from the stock fan is kinda annoying tbh. Another solid, maybe safer bet for a 4080 would be the Cooler Master MasterCase EG200 because it's got great airflow and a built-in laptop stand, which is actually pretty handy for your NUC 15 Pro+. Just double-check those card dimensions first!!

> honestly, I had such a bad experience with a cheaper generic enclosure a couple years ago—it basically fried my power supply because it couldnt handle the spikes from my card. Yeah, those power spikes are no joke, especially with the 40-series transient loads. If ur really worried about the PSU quality in pre-builts, have u considered the DIY route? I’ve been using the TH3P4G3 Thunderbolt GPU Dock lately. It basically lets u bring ur own ATX or SFX power supply, so u can grab a high-end unit that actually handles those spikes properly. Since ur using an Asus NUC 15 Pro+, u have the bandwidth, but the bottleneck is always the Thunderbolt controller latency. DIY boards usually have better cooling because they're open-air, which solves ur thermal issue instantly. Tbh, if u want the absolute best performance for 4K video work, getting a high-quality PSU like a Corsair SF750 and pairing it with a board like the ADT-Link R43SG-TB3 is the way to go for enthusiasts. It’s way easier to service than a sealed box if a fan dies or a cable needs replacing. It’s the ultimate way to ensure compatibility without the proprietary headache.

Big if true

Re: "Big if true" - it really is the most important thing to consider tbh. I've been messing around with these setups for a long time now and in my experience, skipping on the enclosure quality is just asking for a headache. I remember back when I tried to save a few bucks on a generic unit and my whole system would just randomly hard-reboot whenever I launched a game... totally not worth the stress. I totally agree with BinaryBouquet about those transient spikes on the 40-series cards. They're brutal. If you want something that feels safer than a DIY open-bench setup but is more robust than the standard stuff, I've had great luck with the Mantiz MZ-03 Saturn Pro II. I've owned mine for over two years now and it hasn't skipped a beat. It comes with a 750W internal PSU which is plenty for a 4080 and the extra ports on the back are actually reliable, unlike some of the cheaper hubs. If you want something with a built-in stand to save desk space, the Cooler Master MasterCase EG200 is another one I've used that feels super premium. It's got a dedicated SATA dock too, which is nice if you need extra storage for those massive video files. Both are super quiet in my experience, which sounds like what you're after... just gotta make sure you dont skimp on the TB4 cable quality.
