I recently picked up a Dell XPS 8960, and I’m already running out of room on the stock 512GB boot drive. Between my growing Steam library and some 4K video projects, I definitely need to add some serious internal storage. I know this model has an extra M.2 slot and some 3.5-inch bays, but I’m torn between going for a blazing-fast Gen4 NVMe like the Samsung 990 Pro or just sticking with a high-capacity SATA SSD for bulk storage. I’m a bit worried about heat management inside the chassis if I go with a high-performance drive. Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable 2TB or 4TB expansion drive that works well with this specific motherboard?

ngl, i've built dozens of rigs and the XPS chassis is basically a toaster if you're not careful. i've had issues with high-end drives throttling in there. for a budget-friendly 4TB workhorse, i'd skip the overkill 990 Pro and grab the Crucial P3 Plus 4TB PCIe Gen4 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD for around $215. it's way cooler than the Samsung and plenty fast for gaming. if you just want cheap bulk storage for video, honestly just get the Samsung 870 QVO 4TB SATA III Internal SSD—it's usually like $240 and stays super chilly since it uses the SATA bay. go for the P3 Plus tho, it's the best bang for your buck i've seen lately. gl!

Honestly, I've had some bad luck with high-end Gen4 drives in small cases like the XPS 8960. They just run SO hot. For your situation, I would suggest looking at more efficient options that prioritize safety and cool temps over raw benchmark scores.
1. Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770 2TB NVMe Gen4 SSD: This is my go-to. It's DRAM-less so it stays way cooler than a 990 Pro but still feels super snappy for gaming.
2. Samsung 870 QVO 4TB SATA III SSD: If you're really worried about heat, just go SATA for the bulk storage. It's plenty fast for 4K video playback and wont turn your PC into an oven, you know?

Respectfully, I'd consider another option because the P3 Plus is QLC and slows down once it fills up. Since the XPS 8960 is basically a toaster inside, skip the 990 Pro heat too. Honestly, I'd suggest the SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 or the Lexar NM790 4TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe. They run way cooler and are super efficient for 4K video work without hitting crazy prices.
