so i bought this fancy 1440p monitor on sale last week thinking it would just work with anything but my current laptop is basically a potato and everything looks like a slideshow. i really want a desktop now but i am totally lost with all the numbers like rtx this and ryzen that. sorry if this is a total beginner question but is $1000 enough for a prebuilt that wont explode trying to run games at that setting? i was thinking maybe cyberpower or something from costco since i live near one but i dont want to waste my money on something that cant actually handle the resolution. my budget is strictly under a grand including tax if possible...

Regarding what #2 said about the Legion, I actually found the 8GB of VRAM on those base 4060 models to be pretty disappointing for 1440p. I tried running a few newer titles on a similar setup recently and it was stutter city... unfortunately, 8GB just isnt enough for high-res textures anymore. It really sucks when you spend that much and still have to turn settings down to medium just to keep things stable. If you are strictly under a grand including tax, you are basically looking for a $900 machine, which is a tough spot. Most prebuilts at that price point cut corners on the power supply or use cases with terrible airflow. I have had issues with systems that sounded like a jet engine taking off just because the manufacturer used a cheap tiny heatsink. You might have better luck looking for an AMD-based system since they usually give you more VRAM for the money. Keep an eye out for something like the ABS Cyclone Gaming PC AMD Ryzen 5 7600 Radeon RX 7600 XT 16GB 1TB SSD. That 16GB of VRAM is gonna handle 1440p way better than the Nvidia entry-level cards. Just a few things to watch out for when you are shopping:

  • Make sure it has two sticks of RAM, not just one
  • Avoid anything with a solid plastic front panel (no air gets in)
  • Check if the power supply is at least 600W It is honestly a bit of a minefield at this price range, but if you hunt for a sale on that ABS or maybe an Acer model, you can make it work.

To add to the point above: you should totally check out the Lenovo Legion Tower 5i Gen 8 Intel i5-13400F RTX 4060 16GB RAM! I love it because the cooling is actually amazing for a prebuilt.

  • Check Costco often since their return policy is fantastic!
  • The 4060 is actually great for 1440p if you use DLSS... ngl it looks great.
  • Its a solid choice if you want something that wont explode on you!

Be careful with those generic power supplies. I would suggest looking at:

Honestly, 1440p for under a grand is a bit of a challenge but definitely doable if you catch the right sale. In my experience, you really want at least an RTX 4060 Ti to keep those frame rates smooth at that resolution. If you go with a base 4060, you might have to lean on DLSS quite a bit to get decent performance. Since you mentioned Costco, keep an eye out for the CyberPowerPC Gamer Master Gaming Desktop AMD Ryzen 7 7700 16GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB 2TB SSD because they have it on sale pretty often for about $950. Over the years I've seen way too many people overspend on the processor and skimp on the graphics card... just make sure the GPU is the priority. Another solid choice is the Skytech Nebula Gaming PC Desktop RTX 4060 Ti Intel Core i5 13400F 16GB DDR4 1TB NVME which usually stays right under your budget. It wont explode and itll definitely stop the slideshow lol.

I have been looking at the market lately and it is honestly pretty disappointing what 1000 dollars gets you for 1440p gaming. Most budget prebuilts use such cheap components that they struggle with heat the second you push the resolution.

  • My advice is to just go with any ABS Gaming Desktop. They generally use off-the-shelf parts which makes them much easier to fix than the proprietary stuff from bigger brands.
  • Avoid the cheaper HP Victus Desktop models. I had issues with their cooling setups recently and the performance was just not as good as expected for the price.
  • If you can find a Acer Predator Orion on sale, that is usually a solid direction too. Unfortunately, you are likely gonna have to compromise on some graphics settings to hit that budget. It is a tough spot to be in right now...
