Can anyone suggest a solid gaming desktop priced under $1500 that isnt gonna overheat the second I boot up a modern title? Ive been building my own systems since the Sandy Bridge days so I know how to swap a GPU or mess with fan curves but honestly my current 1080 Ti setup finally bit the dust last night after some nasty artifacting and a loud pop from the PSU. Im just too swamped with work here in Chicago to spend three weekends troubleshooting or waiting for individual part shipments so Im looking at prebuilts for the first time in forever.

Im seeing a lot of stuff with 4060 Tis or maybe a base 4070 in this price range but the cooling looks really sketchy on some of these big brand ones like HP or Dell. I need something that can handle 1440p decently well since I just bought a new monitor last month. Is there a specific brand or maybe a Micro Center house brand like Powerspec thats actually reliable these days? Ive heard some horror stories about proprietary motherboards and weird power connectors so Im a bit nervous about pulling the trigger on something I cant easily upgrade later on. Just looking for the best bang for my buck before the end of the month...

Unfortunately, Ive seen too many Omens throttle below 3GHz under load. Grab the Skytech Azure Gaming PC RTX 4070 Intel i7-13700F for better airflow. TL;DR: Avoid proprietary HP junk.

I was honestly terrified of parts failing or things just not working. I ended up getting the ABS Stratos Aqua Gaming PC RTX 4070 Super Intel i7-14700F and I've been so happy with it.

  • the cooling is actually super quiet
  • didnt have to fix anything inside when it arrived It just works perfectly right out of the box. Definitely felt like a safe bet since I didnt want to mess with it.

It uses standard components and wont overheat like HP.

Regarding what #4 said about I was honestly terrified of parts failing or things not working - it is a common worry when switching from DIY to prebuilts after so many years. Since you are in Chicago, you have some solid local options, but for shipping or quick pickup, look at the CyberPowerPC Gamer Master Gaming PC AMD Ryzen 7 7700 RTX 4070 Super 12GB. It usually sits right around $1450 and works well for 1440p gaming. It is a decent option because it uses standard parts, so if that PSU ever pops like your old one, you can just swap it for any retail unit without fighting a proprietary motherboard. The cooling is actually functional since they use mesh cases instead of those sealed plastic boxes. Just make sure to check the fan headers when it arrives, sometimes they get loose in transit. If you find a specific deal and want another set of eyes on the specs, just post it here.

> I need something that can handle 1440p decently well since I just bought a new monitor last month. Quick question tho, what kind of games are you actually playing? If its just esports titles then cooling is less of an issue, but for AAA games you will definitely want a mesh front case. I have been really satisfied with how far prebuilts have come lately, but IIRC some brands still sneak in weird proprietary PSUs. Are you planning to reuse any of your old storage?
