Hey everyone! I am finally looking to make the jump from console and my ancient laptop over to a dedicated gaming desktop. I have been strictly a console gamer for years, but most of my friends have moved over to PC for things like Discord integration and better mods for the games we play. I have been saving up for a few months now and I have a strict budget of $800.
I know that isn't a massive amount of money in the world of high-end GPUs, but I am really just looking for something that can handle modern games at 1080p without catching fire. Specifically, I am dying to play Baldur's Gate 3 and maybe some Warzone with the guys. Right now, my current setup is a five-year-old office laptop that struggles to even open Chrome, so literally anything will be an upgrade at this point.
I am looking specifically for prebuilt options because, honestly, the idea of building one myself is super intimidating. I have watched some tutorials on YouTube, but I have a history of breaking things when I try to be "handy," and I would much rather have a warranty to fall back on if something goes wrong.
I have seen a few deals on Newegg and Best Buy for brands like HP Victus, Skytech, or CyberPowerPC, but I am worried about getting a lemon or something with terrible airflow. Here are a few things I am really hoping to find in a build:
Every time I think I have found a good one, I read a review saying the power supply is cheap or it gets way too hot during long sessions. Does anyone have any specific recommendations for a solid, reliable prebuilt gaming desktop that stays under that $800 mark?
I disagree slightly with just chasing the highest GPU specs. On a tight budget, cheap 4060 builds often cut corners on the power supply, which is risky tbh. Compare the HP Victus 15L Desktop TG02-0032 i5-12400 RTX 3060 16GB RAM vs the Acer Nitro 50 Desktop N50-650-UR13 i5-13400F RTX 4060 16GB RAM. The HP is usually more stable, while the Acer has better performance on sale. Id prioritize whichever has the better warranty coverage.
Quick tip, prioritize airflow. I learned the hard way when my first rig overheated. My iBUYPOWER SlateMesh Gaming Desktop i5-12400F RTX 3060 has been super reliable thanks to the mesh front.
Honestly, if you want something reliable without the headache of building it, just go with Skytech. Ive bought a few machines from them for family members over the years and they always use standard parts so you can actually upgrade them later. Basically any of their entry-level towers will handle 1080p gaming for your budget and their support is pretty solid tho.
Ngl, 800 dollars is a bit of a tight spot but its totally doable if you catch a sale at the right time. Since you mentioned being worried about heat and airflow, you should really prioritize getting a machine with an RTX 4060 rather than the older 3060. The 40 series is way more power efficient, so it generates way less heat which is a huge plus for those compact cases like the HP Victus. Plus, you get access to DLSS 3 Frame Gen, which basically uses AI to smooth out your framerate. In a game like Baldurs Gate 3, especially when you get to the busy city areas in Act 3, that feature is a literal game changer. I actually started out with an HP Victus 15L TG02-1000 i5-13400F RTX 4060 16GB DDR4 512GB SSD and it served me well for 1080p gaming. The main downside with brands like HP or Dell is they use proprietary power supplies and motherboards, so you cant easily swap them out for parts you buy at a store later. If you can find it on sale near your budget, something like the CyberPowerPC Gamer Master GMA5400BST Ryzen 5 7600 16GB DDR5 RTX 4060 1TB SSD is a much better long-term investment. It uses a standard case with better mesh panels for airflow and a regular power supply you can upgrade. Just keep an eye on Best Buy or even Costco, they usually rotate these deals every couple of weeks. Definitely dont settle for 8GB of RAM though, you will regret it the second you open a few Discord tabs while gaming... it just chokes the system.
Noted!
Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷
