My old Acer laptop finally kicked the bucket last week after years of struggling to run anything more demanding than Minesweeper lol. Its about time I get a real desktop setup so I can actually play games like Cyberpunk or the new Elden Ring DLC without it looking like a slideshow. Ive been saving up from my part-time job here in Columbus and I've got exactly $1000 to spend, maybe a tiny bit more for tax. I spent all night looking at stuff online and Im honestly more confused than when I started. I saw a lot of people recommending the HP Victus 15L because its well within my budget but then I read a bunch of horror stories about it overheating and having weird custom parts that you cant even replace. Then I looked at the Skytech ones on Amazon which seem to have better cooling but Ive never heard of that brand before so Im kinda worried about the reliability and if they use cheap power supplies or something. I really need something that can handle high settings at 1080p and stay cool because my room gets pretty hot in the summer and I dont want it throttling. I want to buy something in the next week before my schedule gets busy again. Should I be looking for a specific combo like a Ryzen 5 and an RTX 4060 or is there a better deal out there Im missing? I just want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck without it being a total brick in two years...

To add to the point above: I'd suggest being super cautious with big brands like HP. Like you said, the overheating is a total nightmare because they use those cramped cases. Bad air flow. Since you're worried about your room getting hot, you really need a mesh front panel.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.

We've talked about cooling and those weird custom parts, but honestly I'm in the same boat. Tbh, it's so frustrating that every $1000 prebuilt right now has some massive hidden catch.

Saw this earlier but just getting around to replying now. Honestly its so frustrating trying to find a solid prebuilt without feeling like you're being scammed.

  • The way these big companies like HP use those tiny, suffocating cases is just criminal.
  • It drives me crazy that you spend $1000 and still have to worry if the power supply is gonna fry your whole desk in a year.
  • Even the system integrators are getting greedy with cheaping out on the cooling fans or the SSD speeds just to make their margins look better. It feels like every option has some major flaw you have to just accept which is wild for that much money. Before I weigh in on the brands though, are you planning to stay on a 1080p monitor for the foreseeable future or were you hoping to jump to 1440p soon? That makes a big difference on where you can actually afford to compromise.

Totally was in the same boat last year! Ended up snagging the ABS Stratos Aqua Gaming PC RTX 4060 i5-13400F 16GB DDR5 1TB SSD and man it is absolutely amazing for the price. Played Cyberpunk for 8 hours straight and it stayed super cool even in my stuffy apartment... its way better than those HP rigs with weird parts, plus you get standard components you can actually upgrade later!
