my logic was to just snag a 4060 prebuilt for under 1000 but i keep finding junk with single channel ram and proprietary power supplies. its actually ridiculous. i need a solid machine for my local tournament this weekend. what is actually decent in this price range right now?...

Just saw this! To add to the point above: you're 100% right about the proprietary junk, it is so frustrating! If you have a Micro Center nearby, their PowerSpec G517 Gaming Desktop Ryzen 7 5800X3D RTX 4060 is a beast and actually uses standard ATX parts. Quick question tho, what specific games are you hitting for this tourney? Need to know if you're chasing 240Hz or just a stable 144!

omg I am literally in the exact same boat right now! Just saw this and I have been scouring listings for weeks. Those non-standard power headers are driving me absolutely crazy, it is so frustrating trying to find a clean component list under a grand. Quick thing tho, what specific titles are you guys running at this tournament? Are you aiming for high refresh 1080p or 1440p?

Like someone mentioned, those proprietary boards are a total trap. I've tried many prebuilts over the years and the big-box brands like HP are usually the worst for that. I think I heard somewhere that boutique builders are better about using standard parts? Not 100% sure but IIRC they dont lock you in as much. Finding a clean build under 1k is such a headache lately tbh.

Yeah, definitely be careful with those sub-1k prebuilts. Most of them are basically ticking time bombs if you plan on actually pushing them during a tournament. Honestly, you might want to consider checking the cooling situation first because those cheap cases have zero airflow. I would suggest you watch out for these red flags:

  • Avoid anything with a non-standard motherboard. If it dies, you are basically stuck buying a whole new PC.
  • Check the PSU rating. If it doesnt say 80 Plus Gold or at least Bronze, it is likely cheap junk.
  • Make sure it has dual channel RAM out of the box. Single stick performance is miserable for gaming.
  • Watch out for tiny stock CPU coolers. They will thermal throttle in like twenty minutes. Just take your time looking at the spec sheet. If they dont list the exact brand of the power supply or motherboard, thats a huge red flag in my experience.
