What is the best GPU for 4K gaming right now?

Been building my own rigs since the GTX 700 days so I usually know my way around a spec sheet but honestly the current GPU market has me wanting to pull my hair out. Im trying to push my 4K 144Hz monitor to its limits but my old 3080 just isnt cutting it anymore with these unoptimized ports coming out lately. I was looking at the 4080 Super because the 4090 is just stupidly priced right now in the US - like $2k for a single component is insane - but then I see people complaining about VRAM limits in the long run.

I mostly play heavy stuff like Cyberpunk and I'm prepping for Stalker 2 but the benchmarks are all over the place. One site says AMD is the way for pure rasterization but then I lose out on the better ray reconstruction and frame gen stuff which actually makes 4K playable at high refresh rates. I have about $1400 saved up for this upgrade here in Seattle and I want to buy it within the next two weeks before my staycation starts. Is it even worth going for the flagship right now or am I just getting tricked by marketing? I just want something that wont chug when I turn on some shadows and actually lasts a few years without needing another $1000 investment.

I'm still learning the ropes but I was super nervous about overspending. I ended up getting the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB to stay safe. It handles 4K really well in my experience with DLSS. You might want to consider it if youre on a budget. Just be careful with the power cables because I had a hard time getting mine to sit right in my case...

Building on the earlier suggestion, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB Founders Edition is fantastic if you can find it at MSRP! It fits your budget perfectly. I also love the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB Suprim X for its amazing cooling. It handles heavy loads like Cyberpunk without breaking a sweat... Both are incredible for 4K 144Hz and definitely wont cost you $2k like that 4090 is gonna.

Honestly, I feel that pain with the pricing. If you have $1400, your best bet is definitely the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X. It sits right in that sweet spot for high-end 4K without hitting the $2k madness of the 4090.

DLSS 3.5 is the real MVP here. Frame generation makes hitting that 144Hz target actually possible in titles like Cyberpunk... rasterization alone wont get you there consistently.

16GB VRAM is fine for current 4K. People talk about 24GB like its mandatory, but the memory compression on the Ada architecture is actually really efficient.

If you strictly wanted rasterization, the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB is cheaper, but the lack of Ray Reconstruction really shows in heavy lighting. tbh, grab the 4080 Super and spend the leftovers on a nice dinner in Seattle. Its basically the only logical high-end pick right now.
