What is the absolute best GPU for competitive 1440p gaming right now? I need to buy something by Friday because my current card is bricked and I have a huge league match coming up. I looked at the 4070 Super since it fits my $650 budget but then I read that the 12GB of VRAM is a joke for 1440p and I should get the 7900 GRE instead. But then some people say Nvidia reflex is a must have for shooters like Apex so now Im just stuck. Does the VRAM actually matter if I am playing on low settings for max frames? I can maybe stretch to $800 if it actually makes a difference...

> Does the VRAM actually matter if I am playing on low settings for max frames? In my experience, if youre stripping settings down to hit max refresh rates for a league match, 12GB is plenty. People get way too caught up in VRAM benchmarks that use ultra textures and ray tracing which you wont be using anyway. Over the years I have tested both vendors and honestly, Nvidia Reflex is a genuine advantage for competitive shooters like Apex. It reduces system latency significantly compared to just having raw horsepower. Since you can stretch to $800, you should just grab the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB GDDR6X. It solves the VRAM anxiety with 16GB and the performance is a massive jump for 1440p. If you want to stick to the lower budget, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is still my direct recommendation over the GRE for your specific needs. The latency tools are basically a must when every millisecond counts.

^ This. Also, I am very satisfied with the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB GDDR6X for my 1440p setup. It works well because the 16GB buffer gives me peace of mind for the future. Honestly, I have no complaints since switching last month. It basically fits your $800 budget and stays super cool... definitely worth the stretch if you dont mind the price.

Quick question tho, what power supply are you using? Just wanna make sure everything stays safe and reliable for your match. I am so happy with how my desk looks now, even if cable managing was a total pain.

  • spent hours on zip ties
  • found an old granola bar
  • accidentally unplugged my lamp I basically cleaned my whole apartment instead of practicing... anyway lol sorry for the tangent.

I always get a bit nervous when I see people ready to drop $800 on a whim. You really have to be careful with those price jumps because I once did the same thing and ended up having to skimp on my power supply, which was a huge mistake. Honestly, the hidden costs always get you. I remember I was so stressed about the budget that I actually drove two towns over just to save ten bucks on a surge protector. On the way back, I hit the worst storm I have ever seen and had to pull over at a random diner. I ended up spending way more than ten bucks on coffee and pie while waiting for the rain to stop. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

Regarding what #4 said about your power supply, I once ignored draw warnings and my system failed.

  • Previous points confirm VRAM is sufficient on low.
  • Don't ignore power supply compatibility.
