I am so hyped to finally upgrade my rig but picking a GPU is stressing me out lol. I am aiming for like 240Hz at 1440p for Apex and Warzone specifically. I have about $1000 saved up and want this sorted before my birthday next month.

So I was thinking about the RTX 4080 Super because everyone raves about Reflex and the lower latency for shooters but then I see the 7900 XTX has way more VRAM and some people say it crushes raw rasterization in COD. My logic was go Nvidia for the features but if the AMD card is just faster in those specific titles maybe thats the play? Im just confused if the driver stuff actually matters for competitive play...

I tried the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB recently and while it rips through COD, I had some weird stutter issues during the first week. You might want to consider the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB instead if you just want things to work. Be careful with the power draw tho, I had to upgrade my PSU to 850W just to be safe.

Honestly, the state of GPUs right now is just disappointing. You spend a thousand bucks and still have to worry about whether a driver update is gonna break your favorite game. If you're looking for the absolute safest path for high refresh gaming, you basically have to go with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X even if it feels overpriced for the VRAM you get. I've had way too many issues with micro-stuttering on high-end setups lately, and for competitive shooters like Warzone, any little hitch is a death sentence. Nvidia Reflex really does help with that snappy feeling, though it's annoying we have to pay such a premium for it. Couple technical things to watch out for:

  • check your power supply, something like the EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G7 1000W is a must because these cards have nasty power spikes.
  • dont use the daisy-chain cables for the power adapter if you can avoid it. Its not as good as it used to be back in the day, but sticking to the green team is usually the safer bet for avoiding those weird 1% low frame drops. I'm around if you need me to look over your full parts list to make sure everything fits together right...

Man, I have seen it all when it comes to hardware failing right in the middle of a match! Its seriously the worst feeling when your screen goes black during a clutch moment. It happened to me twice last season during ranking and I was fuming! Reliability is everything! Just hit up YouTube and search for 1440p competitive gpu benchmarks. There are tons of amazing videos that compare stability and driver issues way better than I can here!

Did this last week, worked perfectly

@Reply #4 - good point! ngl I am in this exact same spot and it is seriously stressing me out...

  • I have been analyzing the green and red market options for months and still cannot find a winner.
  • I keep telling myself I might want to consider the green side for stability, but then the red team raw power looks so good.
  • Honestly been dealing with this for 10 weeks and I still havent clicked buy. It is a total nightmare.
