Ive been looking at upgrading my old 2060 because its just dying at 1440p now and I can barely hit 40fps on medium settings lately. I did some digging and basically everyone says the 4070 Super is the sweet spot right now but then I see these massive reddit threads arguing that 12GB of VRAM is gonna be a total waste in like two years and I should just go with the 7800 XT or even a 7900 GRE to get that 16GB buffer. But then people say ray tracing on AMD is kinda meh and I really want to finally play Cyberpunk and maybe the new Star Wars game with all the bells and whistles. Im so torn lol.

My situation:

  • Budget: Hard cap at $600 maybe $650 if it is really worth it
  • Timeline: Buying in the next two weeks before my summer break starts
  • Use case: Mostly heavy single-player RPGs like Witcher or Elden Ring, dont care about competitive shooters
  • Location: Im in Ohio so I can actually hit up a Microcenter if they have a better deal than Amazon

I saw some benchmarks saying the AMD cards are better raw value for the money but if it cant handle the heavy lighting effects in the new stuff coming out then what am I even paying for. Plus my PSU is only 650W so I gotta be careful with the power draw. Is the Nvidia tax actually worth it for 1440p or am I overthinking the VRAM thing...

Unfortunately, I see people get blinded by VRAM numbers and forget about basic system stability. Its honestly disappointing how many threads ignore the reality of running high-draw cards on mid-range power supplies. A 650W PSU is really pushing your luck with something like the Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB. Those cards have massive transient spikes that can trip your protection circuits, and trust me, having your PC black out mid-boss fight in Elden Ring is way worse than slightly lower textures. If you want to play Cyberpunk with the bells and whistles, Nvidia is the only real choice anyway. The ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Super Twin Edge 12GB is far more efficient and actually fits your power envelope. It sucks that we even have to compromise on VRAM at this price point, but 12GB is plenty for 1440p today. Id rather have a stable system that actually runs my games than a paper-weight with 16GB of memory.

I went through something similar last year when I tried to squeeze a high-draw card into my old rig. Honestly, you gotta be careful with that 650W PSU if you go the AMD route... those power spikes are no joke. I once had my system shut down mid-game because my PSU couldnt keep up with a thirsty card, it was a nightmare. Given your power limit and that you want Cyberpunk with the fancy lighting, I'd suggest the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X. It is way more efficient than the 7900 GRE. You might want to consider the Nvidia option just for the peace of mind regarding your power supply. Since you are in Ohio, check Microcenter for the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB at $599. Just make sure you measure your case first so it actually fits.

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really gotta be careful with your power limits. You might want to consider the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X because it uses less power than the 7900 GRE. AMD cards often have huge transient spikes that could trip a 650W unit.

  • check total system draw
  • look for two-fan cards Ngl I'd rather have a stable system than a bigger buffer and a dead PC.

i love that you have access to a Microcenter!! Honestly that changes everything for your situation. I've spent way too much time in that place but its just fantastic for seeing the hardware in person before you buy. Its basically heaven for tech fans. Regarding the technical side, i'm not totally sure how the longevity will play out but i've been thinking about a few things:

  • how specialized hardware for lighting effects helps stability in heavy rpgs
  • the way different architectures handle memory compression which might make a smaller buffer last longer
  • power efficiency differences that could save your 650w psu from clicking off I think i remember reading that the way games allocate memory makes it look like you need way more than you actually do. Not sure but i heard that upscaling tech is becoming the real savior for 1440p longevity anyway. Honestly i think those lighting effects are worth the extra cost if you want that eye candy for Witcher or Cyberpunk. IIRC some of those newer chips are way more efficient with power too which helps your specific build. Definitely check the open-box shelf at the store tho! You might find an amazing deal that fits right in that 600 budget.
