I really need some help because honestly I have been looking at websites for three days now and my head is spinning with all the numbers. I have about $900 saved up maybe could push it to $1000 if it makes a huge difference but im a student so every dollar counts right now. I just want to play games like The Sims 4 with all the expansions and maybe try out some newer stuff like Baldurs Gate or that wizard game because my current laptop literally screams whenever I open more than two tabs and the fan sounds like a jet engine about to take off.

My logic was that I should just look for the biggest screen but then I read somewhere that the inside parts matter way more but honestly I dont know what an i5 or an i7 even does for me. Like is a higher number always better? I saw one that said it had 8gb of ram and another that said 16 and I think 16 is better because more is usually better right? But then there is this thing called a graphics card and people keep saying RTX this and that and I just have no idea where to start or if I'm gonna get ripped off by a salesperson.

So I was thinking maybe I should just go to a store and ask them but I'm scared they will just sell me the most expensive thing they have. I live in Ohio and there is a Micro Center near me but walking in there feels like I'm in another dimension because I dont speak the language at all lol. I just want something that works.

Here is what I am looking for basically:

something that wont overheat and burn my legs while I use it

can handle school stuff and games at the same time without crashing

stays under $1000 total including tax if possible

doesnt look too much like a giant glowing spaceship because I have to take it to class and dont want people staring

Sorry if these are really dumb questions I just really dont want to spend my savings on something that breaks in a year or cant even run the games I want. Does anyone have a specific model they actually use and like? I'm hoping to buy something by next week before the semester starts...

My sisters laptop literally just died three days before she has to move into her dorm and its a total nightmare. Ive been building my own gaming rigs for years so I know what good hardware looks like but looking at the budget laptop market right now is actually depressing. I have a hard cap of $500 from my parents and I need to find something that wont turn into a brick in six months.

Normally Id just say go for a ThinkPad but the new ones are way out of price range and I dont know if she can wait for a refurbished T14 to ship from eBay. Im looking for at least an i5 or a Ryzen 5 with 8GB of RAM but honestly 16GB would be better because she keeps like fifty tabs open while shes on Zoom calls. I was looking at some Acer Aspire 5 models or maybe a Vivobook but the build quality on those cheaper ones always makes me nervous about the hinges breaking after a semester of being shoved in a backpack.

Does anyone know of a specific model that has a decent screen (not that 250 nits trash) and actually stays under that $500 mark? We need to buy it like today or tomorrow so it arrives in time for her first day. Is there a sleeper hit Im missing or should I just gamble on a Best Buy open-box deal?

People on reddit keep saying the Victus has a terrible screen with ghosting issues but then the Nitro 5 reviews say it sounds like a jet engine and overheats like crazy. Is there something better for the price right now or am I just gonna have to compromise on either the screen or the fans...

Does anyone have a solid recommendation for a high-performance gaming laptop that stays under $1500 and actually has decent cooling? Ive been a PC gamer for over a decade and usually build my own desktops so I know my specs, but I just moved into a much smaller place in Chicago and dont have room for a full tower setup anymore. I tried a budget-friendly option last week but the thermal throttling was absolutely insane. It was downclocking the CPU within ten minutes of booting up Cyberpunk and Im honestly so frustrated with how misleading these spec sheets are.

I need something with at least an RTX 4070 that isnt power-limited to some tiny wattage because whats even the point then? My budget is firm at fifteen hundred bucks and Im hoping to buy something before my vacation in two weeks. I was looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro because people say the build quality is better than the cheap plastic stuff but Im seeing mixed reviews about the screen bleed lately. Should I stick with that or is there a better sleeper pick Im missing? I just want something that wont feel like a toy and can actually handle a heavy load without sounding like a jet engine 24/7...

My old Dell Latitude just completely bricked on me this morning and of course it happens right when I have a freelance deadline coming up on Friday. Ive been building PCs for a decade so I know my way around specs but man the laptop market under $700 is a total minefield right now. I was looking at some Acer Swifts but the soldered 8GB RAM is a dealbreaker for me since I usually have dozens of Chrome tabs and VS Code open at once. I really need something with at least a Ryzen 5 or i5 and an actual path to upgrade the memory later if I need to. Im based in Chicago and Ive checked Micro Center but their stock is all over the place and I dont have time to drive around. Im honestly panicking a bit because I cant afford to spend a penny over $700 with tax included but I dont want some plastic junk thats gonna thermal throttle the second I try to compile anything. Is there even anything decent in this price range anymore that doesnt compromise on the screen or build quality too much? What is actually the best performance laptop I can get for under $700 right now?

Im currently torn between the Acer Nitro 5 and the Lenovo LOQ and cant decide if the price jump is worth it. The Nitro is about 800 bucks at my local Best Buy but people say the fans sound like a jet engine and the screen is super dim. The LOQ is sitting right at $950 which is pushing my budget but it seems way more solid for long term use.

I need to pick something up before I move back to my dorm in Chicago next weekend so I dont have forever to browse. I mostly play stuff like Valorant and Apex but I really want to try out some heavier games like Cyberpunk without it melting. I'm starting a new remote gig next month and I'm super hyped to get my home office setup going properly finally! I spent all morning looking at the Acer Swift 3 and the Asus Vivobook S14 but the reviews are all over the place.

Some people say the Acer has a terrible dim screen but then others say it is the best value for the money so I'm just kinda stuck.
