Hey everyone! I’m currently on the hunt for a new laptop, but I’m working with a pretty strict budget of $600. I know that’s reaching 'budget territory' for gaming, but I’m not looking for a powerhouse to run Cyberpunk on Ultra settings or anything crazy like that. I mostly stick to lighter titles like League of Legends, Valorant, Minecraft, and maybe some Stardew Valley or older Steam titles when I have some downtime.
Lately, my old office laptop has been struggling just to keep 30 FPS on low settings, and the thermal throttling is making it almost impossible to play even a simple match without stutters. It’s getting pretty frustrating, especially when I just want to relax for an hour after work. I’ve been looking around online, but it’s tough to distinguish between a 'good deal' and a machine that’s just going to fall apart in a year.
I’m specifically looking for something that has at least 8GB of RAM (though 16GB would be a dream) and a dedicated GPU if possible, even if it's an entry-level one like a GTX 1650 or an RTX 3050 on sale. Alternatively, if there are any newer integrated graphics chips that can actually handle light gaming smoothly, I’m open to those too. Portability isn't a huge deal since it'll mostly stay on my desk, but I really care about the screen quality—I’d love to avoid those super washed-out panels if I can.
Does anyone have experience with specific models in this price range that don't overheat immediately? Are there any hidden gems or upcoming sales I should keep an eye on? I’m curious if it’s better to buy a brand-new budget model or try to find a refurbished higher-end laptop from a year or two ago. Any advice or specific model recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, buying under $600 is tricky because manufacturers always cut corners on the cooling and screen to hit that price point. In my experience, I've seen way too many budget rigs die early from heat stress, so I'm always a bit CAUTIOUS recommending them. For ur specific needs, I'd look for the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH7 with AMD Ryzen 5 6600H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050. It's basically the gold standard for budget builds cuz the thermal design is actually decent compared to its rivals.
The "washed out" screen thing is the REAL challenge tho. Most laptops at this price use 45% NTSC panels which look pretty gray. If u can find a certified refurbished ASUS TUF Gaming A15 (2023) with AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050, the build quality is MUCH sturdier for long-term use. Just be careful with random brands... stick to the big names for better BIOS support. I mean, u could also check "Open Box" deals at major retailers; u can sometimes snag a $800 machine for under $600. Hope that helps!

Ok so, I'd actually suggest a different approach. Respectfully, I've had a bad experience with new $600 laptops... the screens are usually sooo washed out and the plastic feels cheap. Tbh, you're better off looking for a refurbished HP Victus 15-fb1013dx Gaming Laptop or a used Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6 with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti. Those older mid-range builds handle heat way better than a brand-new bottom-tier rig. Just my two cents lol!

yo! i totally get the struggle of trying to game on a crusty office laptop lol, literally been there. honestly, for $600 you can actually find some decent stuff if you catch a sale. I've been using the Acer Nitro 5 AN515-58-525P Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i5-12500H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 for a bit now and im pretty satisfied with how it handles light titles. Basically, for stuff like League or Valorant, it’s gonna crush it—i get well over 100 FPS easy.
Here is what I suggest keeping an eye on:
- The HP Victus 15-fa0031tg Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i5-12450H and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 is usually right around $550-600. It's kinda entry-level but way better than integrated graphics.
- If you can find the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6 with AMD Ryzen 5 5600H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti on sale, that's highkey the best value imo. The screen is alright, tho maybe a bit dim.
- Seriously, try to get at least 8GB RAM, but most of these budget rigs let you pop in another stick later to get to 16GB.
- Also check out the ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX506HF with Intel Core i5-11400H and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050. It's older but still works well for Minecraft and Stardew.
Tbh, I think buying a new budget model is better than refurbished just cuz of the warranty, but check the Best Buy Open Box deals too!! sometimes you can snag a $800 laptop for like $580. good luck 👍

Been thinking about your question for a few hours and honestly, I spent a solid month testing these entry-level builds for a tech blog. The brand trade-offs are super real at this price point. If you go with something like the MSI Thin GF63 12UCX-859US Intel Core i5-12450H RTX 2050, you get a super portable chassis, but the cooling is pretty weak because it only uses one fan. I've seen it hit 90C pretty fast during long sessions. On the other hand, the ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX506HF-ES51 Intel Core i5-11400H RTX 2050 usually has a much better thermal layout with dual fans, but the screen is exactly what you're worried about—kinda dim and usually around 62% sRGB color gamut. If you can find an open-box deal or a flash sale, keep an eye out for the MSI Cyborg 15 A12VE-046US Intel Core i5-12450H RTX 4050. The 40-series cards are way more efficient than the old 2050/3050 chips, so they don't generate as much heat while giving you way better FPS in Valorant. Ngl, regardless of which you pick, I'd definitely look into a KLIM Ultimate RGB Laptop Cooling Pad too. It makes a huge difference on these plastic budget frames when you're gaming for more than an hour.
