Best external SSD for fast laptop data storage?

Hey everyone! I’ve been hitting a major wall with my current setup and could really use some expert advice. I’m currently using a high-end laptop for my video editing and photography projects, but my internal drive is basically screaming for mercy. I’ve reached that point where I’m constantly deleting old files just to make room for new raw footage, and it’s honestly becoming a massive headache.

I’m looking for an external SSD that can keep up with heavy 4K video workflows without thermal throttling or slowing down to a crawl halfway through a transfer. I’ve been doing some research, but the market is so flooded right now that it’s hard to tell what’s actually reliable versus what just has good marketing. I’m specifically looking for something that supports at least USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 or Thunderbolt speeds, as I really need those fast read/write times to edit directly off the drive.

Right now, I’m torn between the Samsung T7 Shield and the SanDisk Extreme Pro, but I’ve heard mixed things about long-term reliability for some of these newer models. My budget is around $200-$300, and I’m ideally looking for a 2TB capacity. Durability is a nice plus since I travel a lot, but speed and sustained performance are my top priorities. I don't want to spend twenty minutes waiting for a 100GB folder to move every time I finish a shoot.

Has anyone here had long-term experience with these, or perhaps a different "sleeper" brand that performs better for the price? I’m really curious if the speed difference in Thunderbolt 3/4 drives is actually worth the extra premium for daily creative work.

What would you guys recommend as the absolute best external SSD for someone who needs high-speed, reliable data storage for a demanding laptop workflow?

sooo i totally feel ur pain with the storage struggle... honestly, nothing is worse than having a high-end laptop feel like a brick cuz the drive is full. i'm still kinda figuring out all the technical deep dives, but i've spent way too much time lately researching this cuz i had a realy bad experience with a drive overheating during a huge project. unfortunately, some of the popular ones mentioned like the T7 just didn't hit those sustained speeds i needed for 4K.

Check out WD_BLACK 2TB P40 Game Drive SSD if you want that USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 speed. it's technicaly marketed for gamers but it's basically a beast for video editing too. i mean, it handles the heat way better than some of the 'pro' branded ones i've tried. if you wanna go even faster, you gotta look at Thunderbolt 3. SanDisk Professional 2TB G-DRIVE Project is a great resource if you need that crazy 2800MB/s speed, but it's definitely gonna push ur budget to the limit.

Wait no, actually... if you want a sleeper pick, look at the OWC Envoy Pro FX 2TB Portable NVMe SSD. It’s rugged as heck and works on both Thunderbolt and USB-A/C which is super helpful for travel. but yeah, be careful with the Gen 2x2 stuff because unless ur laptop specifically supports that exact protocol, it'll just drop down to 10Gbps speeds anyway. honestly it’s so confusing lol.

Pro tip: you might find the 'StorageReview' website or the 'LTT' forums useful for actual thermal testing data—they really go deep into which drives throttle after 10 minutes of heavy use. i guess it just depends on if you want raw speed or long-term durability more?? anyway, gl with the search! peace

yo! so i totally get the struggle cuz i was literally in the same boat last month trying to edit 4k drone footage off a cheap thumb drive and it was a NIGHMARE lol. i’m still kinda new to all the tech specs but i found this awesome sleeper pick while browsing for deals! if you want that crazy usb 3.2 gen 2x2 speed without paying the 'big brand' tax, i seriously love the Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable SSD. it's soooo tiny but it actually handles those massive transfers like a champ plus it's rugged for travel!

* Crucial X10 Pro 2TB Portable SSD - usually around $170-$200, super fast for the price!!
* Kingston XS2000 2TB Pocket-Sized Portable SSD - another highkey great value option for speed.

i mean... the thunderbolt drives are cool but they're like wayyy more expensive? idk if the extra $100 is worth it for most of us. honestly just grab the crucial and save the cash for more lenses haha. gl!

Honestly, I've tried many over the years and i think you should just go with Samsung. Their stuff is highkey more reliable, basically never let me down even with 4K footage.
