Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Lenovo Legion 5i, and while the built-in TrueStrike keyboard is actually pretty decent for a laptop, I’m looking to level up my desk setup with a solid mechanical keyboard. Since the Legion has that specific aesthetic and the ports are mostly on the back, I’m trying to find something that complements the laptop well without cluttering my workspace.
I mainly use my setup for a mix of competitive FPS gaming and heavy coding for school, so I’m torn between getting something with tactile switches or going full linear for speed. I’m also curious about connectivity—would you recommend sticking to a wired connection for lower latency, or is there a wireless option that plays nice with the Legion’s Bluetooth/USB ports without dropping connection? My budget is around $120, and I’d prefer a TKL or 75% layout to save some desk space for my mouse.
Has anyone found a specific mechanical keyboard that feels like a perfect match for the Legion 5i’s performance and look? I'd love to hear what switches you're using and if you had any software compatibility issues!

First off, basically don't even think about using standard Bluetooth for your FPS sessions. I've spent like 5 years testing different setups with my Legion laptops, and the latency on BT will literally ruin your K/D ratio in a heartbeat... it’s just not worth the frustration. Make sure you get a board that has a dedicated 2.4GHz dongle if you wanna go wireless, though honestly, since the Legion's ports are mostly on the back, a simple coiled cable looks sooo clean and doesn't clutter ur desk at all.
In my experience, since you're doing heavy coding AND gaming, I would suggest looking at a 75% layout. It keeps the function row which is a lifesaver for IDE shortcuts but saves enough room for those big mouse flicks. I’ve tried both tactile and linear, and tbh, for a $120 budget, you might want to consider a hot-swappable board from a brand like Keychron or maybe Akko. That way, if you find linears too mushy for coding, you can just swap in some tactile switches later without buying a whole new rig.
I've noticed some software issues with certain gaming brands not playing nice with Lenovo Vantage, so I usually stick to boards that use open-source remapping... it’s just more reliable long-term. TL;DR: Go with a wired 2.4GHz dongle for gaming! Honestly, I've spent years messing with setups and found a 75% layout with linear switches is basically the sweet spot for coding and FPS.

Hmm, I've had a different experience when it comes to switches! Everyone says linear for gaming, but honestly, I'd suggest a different approach—tactile switches from Keychron or Akko are amazing for coding and still feel fantastic for FPS. Linears feel too 'mushy' for school work imo. Just get any 75% board from those brands and you'll literally save so much cash without losing performance. Plus, a wired connection is just safer... why risk a disconnect mid-match??

Regarding what #6 said about "Hmm, I've had a different experience when it..." - its honestly so annoying trying to find that perfect balance. Been a Legion owner for ages and still havent found a keyboard that actually fits the vibe and the performance.
- Constant switching between gaming and schoolwork makes everything feel like a compromise.
- Most boards either look like a toy or they are way too bulky for the 5i desk footprint.
- Dealing with this search for like six months now and still stuck with the stock keyboard because nothing else feels right. Seriously exhausting when you just want a setup that works together without cluttering up the desk or lagging out. Still searching for something that actually clicks...
