I've been looking at the Acer Nitro 5 and HP Victus since they're everywhere for 2024, but then I see reviews saying the Nitro fans are loud as hell and the Victus screen wobbles.

My budget is strictly $800 before college starts, so are these actually good or just cheap...?

I've been very satisfied with the Acer Nitro V 15 Intel Core i5-13420H RTX 4050 8GB RAM 512GB SSD lately. It fits the $800 budget. Performance is reliable for both gaming and school. The thermals are much better now, so fan noise isnt an issue anymore. No complaints here. Honestly, it works well. Its a solid, cost-effective option tho.

> My budget is strictly $800 before college starts In my experience, that 800 dollar mark is the trickiest spot because youre right on the edge of getting something decent versus a total plastic brick. Ive tried many budget builds over the years and honestly, the Victus wobble is annoying but manageable... the real issue is the screen color and brightness on those cheap panels tbh. They can look kinda washed out. If you can keep an eye on sales, Ive seen the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS RTX 4050 8GB RAM 512GB SSD dip under $750 pretty often lately. It feels way more solid than the Nitro and the battery life is actually usable for school stuff. But hey, quick question—are you planning to lug this thing to every single lecture, or is it basically gonna live on your dorm desk? Portability vs power is a huge trade-off at this price, and some of these chargers are like literal bricks lol. Lmk what your typical day looks like!

TL;DR: Look at the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 Intel Core i5-13420H RTX 4050 8GB RAM 512GB SSD for better build quality than the Nitro or Victus. Re: "I've been very satisfied with the Acer Nitro..."

  • I personally moved away from the Nitro line after my old unit had some annoying thermal throttling issues. Switched over to the LOQ series recently and the difference in chassis rigidity is pretty noticeable. The Victus screen wobble you mentioned is a known trade-off for the price point, but the LOQ feels more like a proper mid-range machine. Technical specs wise, you really want to aim for at least an RTX 4050 in 2024 to keep up with modern titles. If you find a sale, the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS RTX 4050 8GB RAM 512GB SSD is another solid alternative with better battery life than most Intel budget builds. Its all about balancing the GPU power with a frame that wont fall apart by sophomore year.
