I really need some help because honestly I have been looking at websites for three days now and my head is spinning with all the numbers. I have about $900 saved up maybe could push it to $1000 if it makes a huge difference but im a student so every dollar counts right now. I just want to play games like The Sims 4 with all the expansions and maybe try out some newer stuff like Baldurs Gate or that wizard game because my current laptop literally screams whenever I open more than two tabs and the fan sounds like a jet engine about to take off.
My logic was that I should just look for the biggest screen but then I read somewhere that the inside parts matter way more but honestly I dont know what an i5 or an i7 even does for me. Like is a higher number always better? I saw one that said it had 8gb of ram and another that said 16 and I think 16 is better because more is usually better right? But then there is this thing called a graphics card and people keep saying RTX this and that and I just have no idea where to start or if I'm gonna get ripped off by a salesperson.
So I was thinking maybe I should just go to a store and ask them but I'm scared they will just sell me the most expensive thing they have. I live in Ohio and there is a Micro Center near me but walking in there feels like I'm in another dimension because I dont speak the language at all lol. I just want something that works.
Here is what I am looking for basically:
Sorry if these are really dumb questions I just really dont want to spend my savings on something that breaks in a year or cant even run the games I want. Does anyone have a specific model they actually use and like? I'm hoping to buy something by next week before the semester starts...
@Reply #1 - good point! Do you use a cooling pad? Caution is needed regarding thermal throttling:
I am so incredibly excited for you because getting a new machine is such a fantastic feeling!! I spent months researching before I bought mine because I was so worried about wasting my savings on something that would just overheat and die. My journey eventually led me to the Gigabyte G5 KF5 15.6 FHD 144Hz i7-13620H RTX 4060 and it has been such a reliable, powerful choice for my own gaming and school work! It handles heavy loads with total ease and the chassis feels very sturdy for daily transport. Quick tips for your Micro Center trip:
Honestly, since you live near a Micro Center, you're already in a better spot than most people. I've been through a few laptops over the years and the biggest mistake is overthinking the processor name. i5 or i7 doesnt matter nearly as much as the graphics card and the memory. Seriously, dont even look at anything with 8gb of ram. It's 2024, and windows basically eats half of that just sitting there. You need 16gb if you want to play baldurs gate while having a few school tabs open without the whole thing crashing. In my experience, the best stealth option that doesnt look like a spaceship is the Lenovo Legion 5 15.6" AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS RTX 4060 16GB RAM 512GB SSD. I've found Legions have the best cooling for the price, so it wont burn your legs as much as the thinner budget ones. It looks like a normal office laptop too, no crazy lights. If that one is too pricey with tax, the HP Victus 15.6" Intel i5-13420H RTX 4050 16GB RAM 512GB SSD is a solid runner up. It's usually way under your $1000 limit and handles the sims 4 like a champ. Just walk into Micro Center and ask for those specific specs. They'll know exactly what you're talking about and you wont get ripped off.
