So I've been looking at finally upgrading my setup because my old 1080p panel just isnt cutting it anymore especially since I managed to get both the PS5 and the Series X last year. I mostly play competitive shooters like Warzone and Apex and I really want that 120hz feel but with the 4k clarity for when I play single player stuff like Elden Ring or the new Zelda.
I did some digging and everyone keeps pointing at the LG 27GP950-B or the newer version of it but I keep seeing people on Reddit complain about the backlight bleed and the contrast being kinda trash in dark rooms. Then I looked at the Samsung Neo G7 because the local dimming sounds great for the HDR side of things but my logic was that the aggressive curve might actually mess with my aim in fast paced games plus I heard their quality control is a total coin flip lately.
Im sitting here in the US with about $800 saved up and I want to buy something by the end of the month but I cant decide if I should prioritize the faster response times of an IPS panel or go for something like the Gigabyte M28U since its cheaper and has the KVM switch for my laptop too. Its a lot of money to drop and I dont want to regret it when some new tech drops right after... what are you guys actually using for high end console gaming right now?
Honestly, spending $800 is a huge commitment so you might want to consider the trade-offs between contrast and speed. I used the LG 27GP950-B 27 inch UltraGear 4K Nano IPS for quite a while and while the colors are vivid, the backlight bleed in dark titles like Elden Ring can be pretty distracting. If you are focused on competitive shooters like Warzone, I would suggest sticking with an IPS panel for the motion clarity. Be careful with the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 32 inch 4K 165Hz Mini-LED because their quality control is still a gamble and that aggressive curve might mess with your aim tracking. One quick tip: make sure you verify the HDMI 2.1 bandwidth to avoid compressed signals. The Gigabyte M28U 28 inch 4K 144Hz IPS is likely your best bet for a balanced console experience right now.
@Reply #1 - good point about the IPS glow, it totally ruins the vibe in Elden Ring caves. Since you want to avoid that aggressive Samsung curve but still want decent blacks, you should look into Full Array Local Dimming (FALD). Most budget 4K monitors use edge-lighting which is why the contrast sucks. Check out the Sony INZONE M9 27 inch 4K 144Hz Gaming Monitor. It uses 96 dimming zones so you get much better contrast than that Gigabyte without the QC lottery. It works well. Few things to keep in mind:
@Reply #3 - good point! Jumping in to say you should definitely check out the Sony INZONE M9 27-inch 4K 144Hz Gaming Monitor for your setup. Since you're on PS5, the integration is fantastic and avoids all those weird handshake issues you get with other brands! I love it because the HDR performance is a total game changer for Elden Ring. It's a super reliable choice compared to the usual QC lotteries, honestly.
Im so excited for you! Just watch out for the HDMI 2.1 trap.
